My neighbor seeks info on this family heirloom. It is lovely!
Family is "from the South". Any ideas? |
I don't know anything about it, but it's lovely. Is it a tablecloth, throw, something else?

These are called 'overshot' coverlets and often date from the 1700s, Colonial times, and were prevalent all over the country at that time. There were many patterns and varying degrees of complexity and color. We still see these being made today.

I have two of them. They were typically made of linen and wool (linsey-woolsy). The looms were relatively narrow so you will often see a seam down the middle where two strips were attached. Somewhere I have a book about them, but I can't put my finger on it right now. The different patterns have names and I meant to look up your pattern. If I find the book, I'll let you know.
