My husband told me about this trick when I got a hang-up call earlier today.

Bring up google.com and type the phone number in the google search area.

Select the search for the website www.whocallsme.com

It probably won't tell you who owns the number, but people write notes on here that may give you a clue as to who it is.

For example ... look at 217-303-8800 (the number I received a call from) and read the notes below. Given that this phone number appears to be a fake "police fund" donation scammer, I don't mind posting the phone number here.

Most of the reverse phone number web sites will now only tell you the general area of the phone (ie "Chicago") but they no longer tell you who it belongs to without paying a fee.

With the number above I at least know it was not someone I wanted to speak with.

And here's another hint about using the phone number in the google search bar. If it's a legimate business - google responses will show you that companies website!! I tried with our business number and it showed our website. Way cool!!

Thanks for the site. We have been getting more and more calls lately. I guess it is coming towards the end of the year and they think I have money to donate. They are so wrong

We've been more calls lately too -- most of them telling me this is my final chance to lower my credit card rate.

We are on the Do Not Call List -- I guess they are excempt.

I get at least one credit card call everyday. CLICK!! You can do *69 and call them back if you really want to know! Don't forget to renew your Do Not Call every year.

I hate the ones that come in Private Name Private Number, and they hang up before you can answer.

We get these calls too -- and we are on the Do Not Call list. This is a big scam -- our AG is trying to track them down and last I heard they are from somewhere in Florida. They want to grab your credit card number so they can charge stuff to it.

I started answering them and saying "I noticed that you don't want me to know who you are, since I am a considerate person I am going to hang up now rather than risk invading your privacy! Good bye!!" They are usually yelling "WAIT WAIT WAIT" as I hang up! Once it was my sister in law, LOL, her number doesn't come up that way anymore!!!
