It depends on where the weeds are. I use my hoe and good old elbow grease in my garden. I don't want to hurt my plants. The weeds that grow in the gravel driveway (impossible to get out) I let the sun do the work. I weigh down a heavy duty black garbage bag for a while in direct sun over a section of the stone. It denies them sunlight to grow and the sun bakes them.

Vinegar your best inexpensive bet.

I would think vinegar will temporarily burn back whatever it is applied to. Some stubborn weeds like thistle take repeated applications of even the most effective systemic weed killers and back they come! The only way to get rid of them is to persistently manually remove them! And that may take years..yes, years! If they have ever gone to seed those little buggers can last a long, long time, just lying in wait til you think you have them beat, then pow! Here they come again!! Good luck..I've been spraying and pulling thistle for about 15 years now, and yesterday I noticed a new batch sprouting!...

There could be a lot of things you can do depending on the situation.

if the weeds are in a veggie garden you can over winter the plot by covering it with black plastic.

If they are in between a flagstone walk way, use a blow torch designed for this application.

There is a product called corn gluten which when applied at the right time of the year, stops weed seeds from sprouting in the spring.

Here is some info on corn gluten:

The $ is well worth it if you can afford it.

Please please please stay away from herbicides. They are so dangerous to animals, pets, small children and big ones too. they kill birds, turtles, frogs and every living thing that comes in contact.

hope some of this helps.
peace

Must give this a try since our government has banned most chemical weed killers for our lawns. HATE weeds!!!

DanaNVa 10-30-2013 09:02 AM

The garden gurus on the radio have been promoting corn gluten meal applied to the lawn in the fall.

Good for Canada!!!! I'll bet you folks still have bees to pollinate your farms.

I just saw something that said cider vinegar will kill the green tops but not roots, but to pour boiling water on the plant to kill the roots too. A two part process.

Hire a few sous-chefs..........

Apparently these sous-chefs love picking weeds.
