Watching a Video with the Sound Off

Sort of entertaining - usually there are a lot of extra gestures with demo type of videos

Annie68 08-19-2019 04:46 AM

I find with demo videos there is way too much chatter, drives me nuts! I'm hearing impaired so generally have the closed captions on and turn the sound off, ahh, much better.

I watch with the sound off many times. Many videos waste precious time to get to the point and I scroll though. The ones that really annoy are the shaky ones or ones with all those hand gestures. LOL.

Aren't we luck to have such wonderful technology to help us?

yesm very lucky. I scroll through a lot of the introduction parts to get to the 'meat'

Anniedeb 08-19-2019 09:11 AM

I like to get to the 'meat' also. Some videos have too much faux chit-chat that isn't necessary. Just show me the procedure, technique, or how to!

I find especially recipe videos are like that. I'd just like to know how to make it, not all the reminiscing.

OMG....I agree! Just stop talking and show us how to do...whatever. Don't care about your family history, or any other blather....just get to the point please, I have other things to do! And please ...no music!!!!!

nativetexan 08-19-2019 11:44 AM

Ha. that is one reason I don't get through movies on Amazon much. they drag on and on. i turn them off. Videos are the same.

I agree. Too much time is spent yakking away especially at the beginning. I dont' need a complete history, I just want to see the technique so I often FF thru the fluff to get to the good stuff.

Do you think all the yakking is just to make the video longer or do they just like to hear themselves talk? :D

I listen to some of them. The others I leave the sound off. It takes them forever to get to the facts. Lots of flipping the hands and going over the same thing about a dozen times,

And the ones with background music - that I guess they 'think' enhances the videos but almost always is way too loud and can't hear the speaker no matter what type video. I end up usually not watching it with sound on. Just leave the music out for heavens sake (or ours).

I am glad I'm not the only one who does this. I'm a visual learner and don't want to hear someone talking about what to do. My computer is on mute most of the time. The gestures can be hilarious.

SillySusan 08-20-2019 05:42 AM

Great idea, y'all! Why didn't I think to do this!? Some of the voices drive me crazy also! And repeat and repeat... Ahhgh!

I watched a YouTube on making the Mondo Bag. It was a great help. Without the volume I was able to “see” what was happening. Of course the person was really good and conscientious at “showing” what she was doing. A great reason to turn off the volume is because it is in a language I do not speak, as this one was.

I do this often. Sometimes learn better from just watching, and skipping the verbal instructions. Particularly annoying if the instructor is too perky or a voice that’s hard to listen to.

bearisgray 08-20-2019 11:36 AM

I am surprised that others watch videos without the sound off -

The main reasons that I have - our computer is int he living room and so is the TV - guess what sound gets listened to? Or I don't want to wake anyone up yet.

pocoellie 08-21-2019 04:27 AM

I usually have the sound and captions off, I just watch what they're doing. I don't like the captions because most the time some of the words don't come out as to what they're actually saying.
