We have a lot of Long Island people here in FL . One couple from Long Island is in my daylily club. They spend winter and spring in FL and spend summer and fall in New York.

It is nice to live in a small town or rural area but it can cause problems as you get older. Expecially if you don't have family around to take you to those appointments when you get older. My parents are both in their 80s. My dad no longer drives and my mom only drives around the small town they live in.

That's true but if you are in GA there is one of the best hospitals around there. Emory. I spent a lot of time there as a patient and am spoiled for life. I need to find more doctors here and I hate that I had to leave mine there.

I just relocated to Winston-Salem NC last year from NY and I love it. The weather is great and the cost of living is good. I can't imagine living anywhere else now!

And NC surpassed FL and AZ as the number one retirement destination in 2010.

I'd say, take a few trips and stay in the areas you think you like for a few weeks and "try it on for size" consider the Pacific NW. It is beautiful and lots to do.

I'm watching this thread closely. We are thinking about where we want to live when my DH retires. He loves to fish and garden. I love to quilt and belong to several quilt guilds, attend quilt shows and retreats. We don't like to be smothered by heat in the summer nor endure gloomy, grey skies or lots of snow. Where is that ideal place?

come to Texas enjoy the heat with is. We would love to have you.

Hubby wants to move to Paris,TN. We really like the area, but no family close by. Maybe we better go for it before it's too late!!

Try Bristol, TN. There are several colleges which present great plays, concerts. Then, there is the famous Barter Theatre in Abingdon, the Symphony of the Mountains in Kingsport and the list goes on. We could go and see something wonderful every night of the week if we had the energy! Bristol is a small town but Knoxville is about 1 1/2 hours away as is Asheville. The cost of living is among the lowest in the country and the people are just great. Check us out! Also, the NASCAR races are held here is auto racing is your thing.

that is one of my favorite tracks..bristol. martinsville, homestead. darlington

We are n the suburbs of Raleigh NC, and it is a great location 2 hours to the beach and about 3 hours to the mountains. Mild winters and we have a huge garden every year. The summers can get hot and humid but after the first year you learn to adjust just do what you need to do outside early in the day. Good Luck
