I have been reading and looking at all the beautiful wedding dress "conversions" threads here on the board, and thought you all might have an answer to my question. A friend who doesn't sew, came up with the idea of making 5 matching Barbie dresses out of her wedding dress, for her 5 grand daughters. I am wondering if that is just too small or can it be done? and who and how would you find someone to do it? The baby christening gowns look so tiny to me, I can't imagine doing Barbie size? Any thoughts?
Thanks :?: |
Oh sure it can.I made some of the cutest dresses for Barbie at one time of my life.Connie in CO

My Aunt made me a Barbie wedding dress, and others out of asian silks, and other beautiful fabrics too. She was an amazing seamstress :D:D:D

I would be hesitant. But that's just me. I can't sew garments. And if I could, I think I'd do them in the size for American Girl dolls. Barbie stuff takes a beating. The grand-daughters aren't going to appreciate it.
|
I think it could be done, have sewed some Barbie stuff for a GD, but I think that the American Girl doll would be of a size that would make the fabric show up far better. And like others say, the kids might take better care of the larger ones.

I made a barbie dress to match my dtrs wedding dress ( yep , I made dtrs dress) back in 2002..... My grandmother made me tons of barbie dresses and ken suits and cloths when I was a child.. I never had store bought barbie clothes growing up... and my dtr had few store boughts ones either......
Now is a different story.... I dont have the sidre , I suppose any more.... |
I still have the barbie wedding dress my aunt made me from her wedding dress. She added sequins and a train. I loved it and still do. I haven't let my granddaughter play with it yet. I got it for my fifth birthday. In 1961. I don't know if I would be brave enough to cut one up but it can be done. I will get it out and post a picture if you would like to see it.

My mom sews Barbie fashions all the time. While I do not have the patience (or finger dexterity) to do them, it doesn't bother her at all.
|
You could also make a wedding quilt with the dress. I think I saw it on this board.
|
Sure, it can be done. But I don't think any of my grandkids would appreciate the significance.
|
Yes please, I would love to see it. I would share this with my friend to give her an idea. Still need to find someone who wants to take this on.

My mom made many Barbie dresses. There are patterns! Here are some: http://barbscraftbooks.tripod.com/dolls/id15.html

Yes, they're small but it can be done. I made some doll clothes for my girls (many years ago) and they even had tiny little set in sleeves. They turned out much better than I expected. Not even any tucks in the set in sleeves.

This brings back so many good memories of my late aunt and my childhood. I told my dh that I am going to find a vintage Barbie and dress her and put it in my quilt studio.

Mcdaniel, that is just beautiful!

Deb, thanks for posting the pictures. It is simply amazing the creativity and talent that some people have.I will show them to my friend, and then I guess the search will be on to find a seamstress that wants to do this...5 times. You're right, you should dress up your sewing room with these memories. It would be fun and always remind you to smile. Thanks again.

They really aren't that difficult, just take a whole lot of patience. I think it's Simplicity that has a barbie pattern that includes a wedding dress. I made one for my granddaughter last Christmas.
