Weighted Vest for Grandson with Autism
 

Has anyone ever made a weighted vest for a child with autism? My 9 year old GS has autism and a weighted vest would be helpful for school. I have looked online but haven't found a real pattern.

This lady sells a vest pattern on etsy. It can be made for a girl or by in lots of sizes.

Has this been recommended by his medical caregiver? How much weight are we talking about? What is the justification for this....excuse my ignorance on the subject, but I don't know anyone who has any family member in this situation so this thread is new and hopefully informative for me.....

This cute backyard safari cargo vest could be used also & fill the pockets with the poly pellets to get the correct weight.

This seems to be a new trend to see if it helps calm kids (or adults) with autism. A friend asked me to do some internet research for her as she was thinking of making one for her grandson. I found this research article and shared it with her. She decided not to make the vest but didn't tell me why. I found this very interesting since my DH has Asperger's and it would be a blessing if he could manage to be still once in a while:)

I looked into the weighted situation a few years back. My grandson loves his weighted blanket! So I was in"vest"igating a vest for while he was at school. We never got that far but I was strongly considering using a fishing vest as those have pockets to add the pellets and are maybe not as obvious to peers. --kinda cool, you know? As I remember, they weren't very expensive and a lot easier than trying to create one on your own.

I have also seen they use weighted pads to put on laps of Alzheimers victims who pace a lot. Apparently they are calming for those folks, as well.

I make weighted blankets and donate them to the public schools for those that are inclusion students. One of the therapists told me the blankets envelope the kids more, however, the vest may work also. I do know a set of autistic twins. One prefers the best and wears is constantly. She is very shy. The other is extremely outgoing and prefers the blanket.
Also, studies show that adults with extreme migraines do well with them also

please make sure the weight is proper for each person

I've made weighted blankets & shoulder ones so when they are eating it keeps them calm,2 of my cousins are autistic & there mom was ticked to death on how much it helped. You make blankets & shoulder ones you fill them with white pellets , The vests you fill with BBs

There is a tutorial on Man Sewing. I don't remember that he addressed how much weight they should be. I considered bring it up at our Guild as a charity project.
