Try Charlotte Vale Allen books. I never hear her mentioned and I never read a book of hers I didn't like.

I also would suggest these as I find the everyday humor and the mystery enjoyable!

So sorry to hear about your mother. Incredibly tough thing to be going through but know you are making a significant difference in her life. Don't be afraid to ask for help from others, even if you have to hire someone to give you a little time away. It will make you a better caregiver. Give any book by Dorothea Benton Frank a read. She is fabulous. My prayers and wishes go your way.

My all time favorite book is "Swiss Family Robinson ". It always renews my spirit, even though I have read it at least ten times.

jodyma 10-19-2011 05:26 AM

Sorry about you mom. My 65 year old husband is suffering Alzheimers' and each day is a challenge. God Bless you. I love Sandra Brown and my all time favorite is Judith McNaught.

Thanks for your kind thoughts and your concern. I really appreciate all of the support and kindness from the members of this board. Everyone has been wonderful. I'll look into the books and authors you've suggested. They sound like subjects I would be interested in and the 700 pages doesn't scare me off (lol)! Thanks.

"To KIll a Mockingbird" was/is a great book, also "Where The Red Fern Grows." They are both very easy reads to be sure but they both have left me in tears, even after rereading for the umphteenth time.
"The Help" was very good as well.

judi wess 10-19-2011 05:33 AM

I will add to the list above, Karin Slaughter. Definitely not wishy washy. I can't put her books down.

merlotplyr9 10-19-2011 05:43 AM

Yes, the Mitford Series! good reading!

nab1213 10-19-2011 05:45 AM

Anything by Nicholas Sparks, He is my favorite.

Tudey 10-19-2011 05:51 AM

Have you read "The Help" yet? Great book!

TMK 10-19-2011 05:58 AM

My favorite is Diana Gabledon. She will be releasing her 9th (?) book in a series (since 1991) Great read, time travel, romance, history and yes some sex. Actually I am re-reading all of them, waiting for the next installment.

Quilt Mom 10-19-2011 06:07 AM

Brock and Bodie Thoene have written a couple of series that are good historical fiction if you like that genre.

stoppain 10-19-2011 06:21 AM

Have you read the Jennfer Chiaverini books
they are great I have all of them, except the new one not out yet

mommafank 10-19-2011 06:23 AM

From someone who reads almost anything, would help to know what your interests in reading are. Something I loved may end up on your hate list. Recently though, I have been reading some of the old stuff like Gone With the Wind and Grapes of Wrath. I loved Water for Elephants and The Help and The Mercy of Thin Air.

boomer47 10-19-2011 06:39 AM

I love mystery and suspense - however, for a good read - a great story try anything by Maeve Binchey - I'm reading her latest "Minding Frankie" and it is wonderful.

Valerie Scherr 10-19-2011 06:39 AM

books on the subject of quilting I like are Marie Bostwick and Jennifer chianverini though her last book was a disappointment.

grandjan 10-19-2011 06:40 AM

I just finished a book titled "Left Neglected" that I would recommend highly. It's about a young mother who suffers a form of brain damage that makes it impossible for her to recognize "left". Inspiring, very readable, interesting subject matter. Was written by a brain specialist but it's fiction and an easy read.

nancy59 10-19-2011 07:04 AM

I read a variety of books but I loved Sarah's Key, I finished The Story of Edgar Sawtelle last night. Nora Roberts, is an easy read, anything but Stephen King novels I guess.

Rann 10-19-2011 07:07 AM

I love the Patricia Cornwell series and the Jeffrey Deaver.

Yvonne 10-19-2011 07:07 AM

My current favorite read is "A Discovery of Witches" by Deborah E Harkness. It has witches, vampires and demons but is basically a romance. It's a very clever book and has some very fun sections as well as a few worrisome! The second book doesn't come out until next summer. I'm having a hard time waiting! (Much better than the "Twilight" series!!!)

Another favorite author is Louise Penny. She writes mysteries set in a small Canadian town, Three Pines. She incorporates some humor along with the grim.

Both authors are excellent!

roadrunr 10-19-2011 07:29 AM

My old time favorite author is James Mischner. He writes historical fiction novels that takes a place and goes back way into time and brings it forward to today all in hte same place. The historical facts are correct as well as some of the characters, but he makes up characters to go into the story.. His books are long, but they are enjoyable to read. I really enjoyed his book "Poland", "Centennial".
Oh, yes, he also wrote "Tales of teh South Pacific" which they made a movie out of.

Sharonsews 10-19-2011 07:56 AM

I agree with the above ideas and if I can submit a few more:
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Lee Child - all of the Jack Reacher series
The Snow globe by Sheila Roberts
Karen Kingsbury books

when you need more, pm me. I am a librarian that is an avid reader. If I don't have time to have a book in my hands, I have earbuds in my ears with a book on cd playing and my hands are busy with fabric...

lbc 10-19-2011 08:23 AM

Thanks, Becca Bear, for asking this question. I am an avid reader and it's great to get names of new authors. I have only reviewed the current page, but in case these haven't been mentioned they are all good.

Fern Michaels, Debbie Macomber, Danielle Steel, Nora Roberts,Elin Hilderband, Richard Paul Evans, Lisa Scopttoline and Maeve Binchy.

jolo 10-19-2011 08:34 AM

I am addicted to romantic suspence stories. I have discovered the Love inspired suspence series. They are Christian inspired,no foul language or explicit sex. I love them, of course I love the Harlequin Intrigue series also, anything by Mary Higgins clark and her daughter also . Nora Roberts. For a change of pace I like J. Hillerman, Patterson and Koonze also except for the bad words. lol If it comes right down to it . I just love to read.

fmacashley 10-19-2011 08:46 AM

Have you read "The Memory Quilt"....A Christmas story for our times by T.D. Jakes. I loved it.

Marylian Casey 10-19-2011 08:48 AM

I read the Red River of the North Series by Lauraine Snelling. It was about the Bjorklund family coming from Norway and settling in Blessing,North Dakota. It was interesting and told of many things they incountered in their lives.

I agree - her first books were hysterical. She has gotten a little vulgar though, and I don't see a need for it. They are still funny regardless.

Because my dear husband passed away, I've been reading alot of books to help me cope and understand things. When he was on Hospice I read the book "Heaven is for Real" by Todd Burpo. I would also read excerpts to my husband as he was laying in bed.
After his passing I've read "A Grace Disguised" by Jerry Sisster. I daily read "The Daily Bread"
I'm now reading "Grieving the Loss of Someone You Love" by Raymond R Mitsch and Lynn Brookside.

I will say a prayer for your Mom to get the sleep she needs. I know that lack of sleep causes the dementia to be worse..((hugs))

Well, I'm a mystery fan And love cozy mysteries that include anything quilting, sewing, knitting, other crafts & bed & breakfasts, teas & coffee shops & foody things, also animals. There is a website for cozy mysteries just put it in web search & you will find an endless list of books to read.
Earlene Fowler has a great quilting series among some.

Debs & Hemi

For mystery readers, give Jefferson Bass a try. Jefferson Bass is a pen name for two men who write together. One of them, Bill Bass, is the man who started the Body Farm in Tennessee. Anyone who likes CSI type things should really like him.

For a glimpse of women's issues in the mid-east, try Jean Sasson. She writes excellent non-fiction about women's rights in Saudi Arabia.

For a look at a different way of life in America, try The Last Frotiersman by James Campbell. It is an amazing true story of life well above the artic circle.

The authors mentioned earlier are all great, too. I just wanted to bring up a few that had not been mentioned. The list of great books could go on forever. I love seeing other people's ideas.

AZTeri 10-19-2011 09:09 AM

I second The Mitford Series. You will fall in love with the characters.

I also love Alexander Whitehall Smith - The #1 Ladies Detective Agency series. It's a hoot! I have the first of his new series loaded on my Kindle, but haven't started it yet.

Very lightweight, fun reads - the Sister Chicks series.

I also love anything by Margaret Truman - mysteries set in and around the Washington DC area.

In the mystery genre - I also have read just about every Agatha Christie novel published - several times over!

Dan Brown's books are engrossing - but if you've seen the movies, for me that can be a distraction. I liked reading Angels and Demons - after I had been to Rome and seen some of the places he mentioned in the books. Same with the Da Vinci Code - it was fun seeing the Louve after reading his book. My sister and I went on a "hunt" so to speak for the paintings he mentions in it :)

Oh - another book I really enjoyed was Under the Tuscan Sun. I saw the movie also, but REALLY liked the book, especially since it has 3 or 4 chapters that are actually COOKBOOKS :) I really want to go back to Italy and to the town that is the setting for the book.

maxsoncreations 10-19-2011 09:22 AM

I LOVE mary higgins clark books. I also read cookbooks front to back...yeah Im weird. I doodle alot so sometimes I doodle or draw when I cant sleep. Get some of her books. I buy them used on ebay or amazon!

dogpursemaker 10-19-2011 09:49 AM

One of my very favorites is the Left Behind series. Most of the books are the kind you just can't put down. The authors are Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. Tim LaHaye has a few other series as well that I really enjoyed. Everything I've read by him is an easy, engrossing and entertaining read. His books are very clean.

susanlh 10-19-2011 09:55 AM

Just finished reading "The Art of Racing in the Rain". Absolutely loved this book. It is a book written by a dog. Yes the author wrote this book as if he was a dog. It is cute and as I was reading it, I could see my dog doing and saying those exact things. Highly recommend. I have my book circulating through work right now and everyone has been able to read it in 1 or 2 sittings.

mzsooz 10-19-2011 10:11 AM

Another vote for the Diana Gabaldon Outlander series.

I also love:
Patricia Cornwell Scarpetta series
Iris Johanson- Eve Duncan series
Sophie Kinsella - Shopaholic series
Meg Cabot - any, but love the Heather Wells mystery series

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Jimmy Carters books are also very fun.

My daughter tells me The Hunger Games series are great but I haven't started reading it yet.

sewmuch 10-19-2011 10:25 AM
