What to do???
I leave tomorrow on vacation and to be with my sister during her surgery. All I think about is the fact that I don't have any UFO to take that I can hand quilt! Ugh!!! I should have planned better han this. I know I will go crazy. I know I will feel lost without something to "fiddle" sigh in my hands at night! Do I sound crazy??? My DH thinks I am! Any ideas on something I could do???

Make yoyos and then follow the post that Craftybear did in Links and Resources. There are a lot of good ideas there.

Work on some hand embroidery or twilling, then you can incorporate them into a quilt later.
cut some hexagons and larger ones for backing and make individual finished hex's. also take batting the size of the main hex's. when you get back, sew them together by hand. done!!!
Do you have a quilt that needs the binding hand sewn to the back? Redwork takes very little in supplies just your background square, needles, scissors, perle cotton/embroidery floss, hoop and a pattern to draw on the fabric. A crochet hook, pattern and a massive ball of yarn has kept me sane in many a waiting room.

Chicken scratch? You embroider onto checked or plaid material - usually a quilt block pattern and then make the squares into a quilt.
Make some hexies...lots of templates on the net. they are small, easy to carry, and will keep you busy F O R E V E R!!
No your not crazy. Having something to do will keep you from driving your sister crazy. LOL Whatever you choose to do make sure it's something you can easily put down at any time. Maybe needle turn applique?
Maybe a small wholecloth quilt, handquilted. A couple of fat quarters and a bit of batting, small and compact!
Applique.... something to embroider.... best wishes for her speedy recovery

here are some large hex's I made for a friend. made smaller ones for coasters too.
How about trying a crayola quilt? You can take pre-cut white squares, copy a pattern from a coloring book, then color.
buy some quilting magazines to read. Keeps me busy for a good long time. I could page through the pictures forever. I also have a book on fabric folding. Maybe you could get a link for some free fabric folding sites and try it out.

Get a jinny beyer pattern and cut some pieces to hand sew. It might never get to be a finished quilt, but will keep your hands busy!

When my husband had a 6 hour surgery last year, I took my blades for a dresden plate and hand sewed the top of the blades and had enough time to hand sew the blades together. You're not crazy - if I don't have something to do with my hands I drive everyone else crazy. Take care and best wishes for her surgery.

I have been in your shoes, and the anxiety that comes with having nothing to work on is crazy. You have my sympathy, maybe you could find a good book just to relax and read. Hope all goes well.
