What do you do for daily exercise ?

I probably will buy an activity tracker bracelet to keep me motivated, but until then, tell me what you do for daily exercise - how long and how much ??

KalamaQuilts 07-30-2015 11:37 AM

walking which can be up and down stairs and around the house in the normal course of the day, usually adds up to about 2000 steps. (pretty sedentary)
walking down our steep hill and meeting Rob on the way home, that is about 2500 steps, about a mile and a half with my stride and a real workout because it is so steep, I do that 3 or 4 times a week
Mowing the lawn once a week, I break it up over 3 days, but the total is about 17000 steps.

I also do yoga

I walked a lot more last year, but in truth I think I was just running away from my problems
Casa OKa this year, so I'm much happier in the house than before.

I bought Rob and I both FitBit Zips last year (the smallest fitbit made).
We compare our steps every day and compliment each other on making the effort to add steps into our days.
Even on the days I know I'm going to sit in my chair and sew all day it is always on my bra as acknowledgement of our fitness goals.
Rob has occasionally gotten high as 18000 in a day

10,000 steps a day is the general health field consensus of a daily goal.
Best wishes on however you tackle healthy living

Right now my exercise consists of riding a tractor while raking hay or walking the fields dragging a hose while spraying weeds!

Tartan 07-30-2015 01:26 PM

I go for a walk every day outside. Bonnie Hunter puts her tracker on her shoe when she treadles. Now that's a great way of adding to your steps!:D

mtkoldra 07-30-2015 01:28 PM

trying to walk for about 45 minutes every day, it is a bit hilly here so it is a bit challenging or rather makes you huff and puff if you keep a good pace

donnajean 07-30-2015 01:44 PM

I walk every day - in the neighborhood when weather permits; in stores when too hot or cold; or up and down stairs when I can't go out. I also take care of my yard the help 3 neighbors with their flower gardens & shrubs. My yard is my gym and all the neighbors love to see the seasonal progression of blooming flowers.

gramajo 07-30-2015 02:02 PM

I have bad knees and back. Stairs are a real challenge. I live in the country on a 55mph road, so I walk in my circular driveway. I try to get 1 mile several days a week. I know it's not near as much as I should be, but, hey, it's a lot more exercise than I got while I was working.

bjsmith57 07-30-2015 02:12 PM

I try and walk 4 miles each day; Monday through Friday:)

thimblebug6000 07-30-2015 04:52 PM

I guess it depends on what your life is like at the moment; when I worked I walked every evening, but now that I'm retired I walk up to the pool about 2500 steps and home and do an aquafit class there 3 times a week. I still walk every evening as I like to get in 10,000 steps if possible. I found a group that meets every Sat morning and we walk together for an hour, not fast... as many of these ladies are cancer survivors and this is their answer to a support group. I used to hike once a week with my Sis but she's not able now and I really miss the great high I got from that; just try to keep as active as you can... park further from the stores.... walk instead of elevators... etc.

maryb119 07-30-2015 06:32 PM

I walk 3 miles almost everyday. I have been doing this for years. I go early in the morning when it is cool. Great way to start a day!

lynnie 07-30-2015 06:44 PM

My exercise consists of browsing the QB. I ned to start walking again. as soon as it cools off a bit, and only if my back lets me.

earthwalker 07-30-2015 10:07 PM

Walking, gardening and working 3 days a week with people with a disability. Keeps me pretty fit, but I am going to start doing some weights soon and some core exercises....hate having poor muscle tone. I have a Fitbit (I am addicted to it) and my best day is always Tuesday (Riding for the Disabled) running around a paddock with a horse and rider really is a good work out:). I have 2 forms of arthritis....so exercise is really important to me.

mary r 07-31-2015 01:33 AM

I usually walk 3-4 times every week. The mailbox is 2 miles away. Wisconsin offers a program called Strong Women but men go too. It's exercising with weights for an hour. Some 85 year old ladies use a pair of 10 pound weights for their hands and legs. It helps with body movement and balance and bone density. Good program. Good luck with movement. It keeps the body moving.

mjsylvstr 07-31-2015 02:27 AM

other than the usual up & down the flight of stairs and around the house, my sewing room is on the second floor......
......I go from machine, to ironing board to cutting table...and that a lot of traveling..I am a PPer!!!!

sandy l 07-31-2015 03:02 AM

Try to use my treadmill set at number 6 or 7 incline at least for 1/2 hr each day

jmoore 07-31-2015 03:12 AM

I love to see so many active board members... I still enjoy running so I try to run 10 miles a week and on in between days I take an aerobics class. It's tougher in the winter but we have a wonderful YMCA with an indoor track.

rjwilder 07-31-2015 06:02 AM

I go to the gym for 2 hours each day, lift weights, run on treadmill and take one aerobics class. I start at 5:30 so I have plenty of time left in the day to sew and do errands.

sparkys_mom 07-31-2015 06:04 AM

I stopped being able to use my treadmill due to sciatica. I moved about six months ago and the extent of my walking has just been to get my poor dog outside. I also started using a recumbent bike where I now live and have worked up to 25 minutes a day. Yesterday, I finally threw in the towel and got one of those cortisone shots in my spine. I'm ever hopeful that this is going to get me back in action. They told me it might take 3-4 days to make a change but my leg already feels better this morning. The other thing I do is a DVD workout by Anne Pringle Burnell. It's called Stronger Seniors and is primarily chair exercises. As long as I don't have to stand I'm good to go and I really like her. It is broken into sections so you don't have to do everything. I usually do the warm up and the weights. I depend on the recumbent bike now for the aerobics.

aronel 07-31-2015 08:21 AM

Hmmm, point and click.......... Sorry, couldn't resist, but this just about sums it up. Keeps my fingers agile.

I get out of bed. (Ha, ha, couldn't resist).

Three Dog Night 07-31-2015 09:13 AM

I usually exercise in morning and try to get a 1 mile walk in at lunch. Morning workout consists of Leslie Sansone DVDss or Jessica Smith online videos (they are free and she has lots). I have bad knees so if I overdue I have to try to recover so will do the Stronger Senior or Chair Dancing DVDs. Just keep trying to move it so I don't lose it.

tessagin 07-31-2015 09:28 AM

Too many stray dogs in our neighborhood. I go to the mall couple times a week park furthest from the door. I can go up stairs but have trouble going down. When I go grocery shopping I don't ask for help. I usually get to countertop water jugs and case of bottled water. Fairly heavy and part of my weight training (lol). Our tap water is awful and we just last week had a water advisory. Ok to take a shower an do dishes but all tap had to be boiled with exception of brushing teeth. We used the boiled for brushing teeth. But loading the water into the cart, to the car and into the house. Quite a bit of weight. I also have other weights I use. 5&10#ers. If our mower was different, I would mow the yard. But DH doesn't want to buy different one. that would be a few steps added.

Stitchnripper 07-31-2015 02:36 PM

I go to the gym three times a week. I do cardio on my own or walk the track with a friend. Then I do weights classes. My gym is women only which for me is nice. I am pretty active the rest of the day. Sometimes walk outside. My routine at the gym takes a couple hours those three days so I think that is good.

Deb watkins 07-31-2015 03:29 PM

Golf(walking) at 6:30 am and then again later in the late afternoon 3 to 4 days a week. Work in the garden/landscaping on the other days. I used to do the Yoga and Pilates 2 - 3 times a week before I came down with Mono. Now it a little more rest, but still try to do something every day.

luvstoquilt 08-01-2015 05:20 AM

I am a walker but have lost my walking buddies. One is having surgery and the other ones busband retired so she is spending time with him. I am not as motivated as I was but am really talking to myself. We walked 5 miles a day and that is pretty boring to do alone. Gotta get moving!

JoyjoyMarie 08-01-2015 06:34 AM

I play tennis with my hubby every other day when weather and schedules permit. Otherwise its a walk, or the gardening, or a bike ride. I try to mix it up. Exercise is essential for me - it makes me sleep, it keeps me limber, makes me a happier person.

paoberle 08-01-2015 06:39 AM

I clip my Fitbit on when I get up in the morning and take it off when I go to bed. I walk 3-4.5 miles 3-5 days a week. I do a spin class one day a week. I am going to try attaching the Fitbit to my shoe to see if it will register. I do a Stability/exercise ball class twice a week. I do a water aerobics class one day a week. It is hard to get to my goals on the days I do not walk, but I know that I have probably met my goals. I love to hike so it is a lot of fun to see how many steps I take and floors I climb after 6-7 mile hike.

briskgo 08-01-2015 06:49 AM

yoga once a week, Tue, and Friday I bike to a property I manage, takes about 5 trips to get it done, I walk/jog the dog twice a week with a nice hill.

briskgo 08-01-2015 06:50 AM

I've out lived my walking buddies they are missed

Irishrose2 08-01-2015 08:20 AM

My walking buddies are four legged so I walk about 2 miles a day. One yoga class a week with yoga videos on three other days. I just tried a HIIT class with weights online. Not a good idea, but have started working with light weights on my own. I need to get stronger for the yoga class.:D I have both a bicycle and a tricycle but haven't been riding much. My massage therapist recommended I ride more so I will try. Too hot during the day, but it doesn't get dark early now so evening will work.

sewbizgirl 08-01-2015 08:33 AM

I work at a gym, teaching 5 group exercise classes per week. I teach yoga, water aerobics, and senior fitness. Besides those I teach, I also take classes there from other instructors. I get in about 3-4 spin classes per week, 2 core classes, 2 yoga, and 1-2 weight lifting. Each is an hour, but once a month we have a 1.5 hour spin class on Saturday morning. Special holidays we might offer a 2 hour spin! I get plenty of exercise and never have a problem sleeping well at night. BTW, next birthday I will be 60.

I'm glad to see so many of our board members walk and keep fit. Walking (not strolling) is a great way to stay in shape. It keeps your muscles toned, your weight in check, and your stamina up. Good for you!

Lucille 08-01-2015 08:57 AM

I ride an exercise bike 1/2 hour as soon as I get up and watch the weather channel. Then I walk 1 mile after breakfast and then after dinner around 700pm I walk another mile. I am 81 years old and have always done this years ago I did Debbie Reynolds and Paige Palmer exercises but now I just ride bike and walk.

Onebyone 08-01-2015 01:13 PM

I live in a one way in one way out circle drive and the walk to the end and back is 2 miles. I walk it early in the morning, about 5:30 am and then again in the evening. If I don't have my grands for the day I walk again before I take my afternoon nap. I won't go to bed until I have 10,000 or more steps unless I'm sick or just can't walk due to weather. I lost 30 lbs in three months when I upped my walk by 2 miles more each day. Walking is free and I need the sunshine. I park as far away as I can from any entrance, use stairs, and when I do laundry I fold and take one item at a time to it's proper place. Five folded towels is five trips from laundry room to bath room. My grands are little so we make a game of walking back and forth doing all kinds of things in the house.

I found the perfect pedometer:I like better then the bracelet ones and no computer or phone needed: Omron Alvita Ultimate Pedometer. It has never missed a step or miss counted movement for steps. Keeps a log of the weekly steps, calories, and miles walked. I can set a goal and it keeps track of that too. My Dr doesn't tell me to lose weight anymore, he tells me to not gain any.

meanmom 08-01-2015 02:28 PM

I had my knee replaced 3 months ago. I just bought a new bike and love it. I have been trying to ride 20 miles or more 3x a week. I also try to get in some walking but I don''t really enjoy that as much. I also just got a bike rack to put on my car (yard sale $3 ) I live close to a bike path but there are many others around here. I recently added a little bit of weights. I have a fitbit zip and try to get 10,000 steps a day. I am going ot try a spinning class as I enjoy them also. I work at a school and have to go back to work August 24th. I will have to adjust my exercise then. I could ride my bike to school as it is about 8 or 10 miles but there isn't a shower and there are a couple of big hills. Since my knee replacement I am still not too good with hills.

franc36 08-01-2015 02:37 PM

I go to our hospital's Wellness Center seven days a week. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I go to an hour's fitness class for seniors (I'm 79). On Tuesday and Thursday, I take Tai Chi. On the weekends, I exercise for an hour on machines in the gym. I have my sewing room set up so that I have to walk to get to things so that I get some exercise when quilting.

zennia 08-01-2015 06:26 PM

I ride my bike everyday even if its only around the block. I like to go 6 miles but not always able to have the time to.

Onebyone 08-02-2015 08:18 AM

I really like bike riding. It's so much fun. I bought a regular pedal bike, no gears, like the one I had as a child. The new adult women's bikes are very pretty! I wish I lived in a town where I could bike to shop and do other errands and not worry about theft of the bike!

Ditter43 08-02-2015 03:25 PM

Oh how I envy all you walkers. I'm at the point where I walk from the bedroom to the dining room where I sit and read after breakfast. When I start to feel human, I walk to my computer, then to my sewing room or back to the dining room to read some more. I have so much back and right hip pain I seldom walk very far. I am having problems now with sewing and quilting. I can't use the foot pedal to run my machine for long because my hip will hurt for days if I am not careful. I don't sleep well due to the hip pain anyway so I try not to aggravate it too much. I've always heard getting old is not for sissies.....too true!!! So to all you active members...I am truly happy for all of you. Keep up the good work!!!

Rosyhf 08-02-2015 03:35 PM

I go to the gym 5 days a week. I start with cardio. Treadmill at a speed of 3.2 and incline of 10. Then I i lift the bar for three sets of 10 (45 lps). Then I do five other machines as per my trainer. When I get done, I do yoga for 20 minutes so I guess I am at the gym from 1.30 to 2 hours. I have been doing this for almost three years. I have just started with the trainer since March and there is a huge difference in my strength etc. I no longer have sciatica, or pain in my knees. I know this takes a huge chunk out of my day, considering the amount of sewing and painting and other stuff that I do....but I do it because It makes me able to do all the things I love. I call it an investment in myself.

Three years ago I started in at 163 pounds and I am now at 145 and I am so happy. I lost it slowly and it's staying off, of course I cheat but I get right back on, not a diet but just not eating sweets stuff. I have at least 12 - 15 more pounds to go, I am 5 ft tall and I don't want to be skinny and I am 74 years old.

IBQUILTIN 08-02-2015 05:24 PM

I am walking about 4 miles a day now, and need to quit for a while because the Dr wants me to try to put some weight on. I'll tell you true, it is harder to put it on than it ever was to take it off.
