I am a sugar lover and am partial to cakes and cupcakes and baked goods but after watching the bakery shows on TV shows lately I don't think I'd ever order a fancy cake.

Does anyone else think long hair should be covered or pulled back when working with food? Actually, all hair. Everyone's hair is hanging around their face and over the frosting-yuck! No gloves.

Tonight I watched the Bakery Bunch for the first time and they were cleaning out their van and trying to identify old unknown food chunks and talking about how bad it was. Then swept it out with a mini-vac and placed this thousand(s?)dollar wedding cake (the baker's words)into the back part of the van without a box!! The baker then went back inside wearing the same apron she had worn to bake and clean in...ewww!

Call me old-fashioned but hairnets weren't just about being pretty :hunf: Does this bother anyone else?

It really bothers me to find a hair, even if it is my own. I worked in the business and took food safety courses. (We had to buy our own). I was told that there has never been a disease linked to ingesting hair. Ick. It didn't make me feel any better when I found a hair in my pizza once. I have seen a lot of gross stuff in my day. Maybe we should tell the managers when we eat somewhere when people are not wearing hair nets, that we would appreciate it if the workers would wear them. Those little paper hats don't do anything to keep hair out of the food. I am with you, hair nets please.

I agree with you they need to wear them in our food services!

I've never been that freaked out about hair. Now when I think about people using the restroom and not washing their hands, I get really freaked out. And you know it happens. Give me a clean, shampooed hair that hasn't touched feces any day. I'll gobble it right down.

I have waitressed and bartended for years, always have to wear pony tails. Not sure how they get away with it. Wisconsin is really strict.

I don't think being conscious of good hygiene is being "old fashioned". What you described is downright disgusting.

If I find someone's hair in my food...that's it...I'm done!

I love to cook, but I am a fanatic when it comes to cleanliness in my kitchen. ;)

Have you ever noticed on the cooking shows that the chef will be handling raw chicken, and then touch the salad ingredients which are now contaminated...Eeeeewwww!

Chele 07-12-2010 05:02 PM

I notice just the opposite JanetM. On the Food Network, they are always so obvious about washing your hands after handling meat. Like what cook doesn't know that?! Kind of scary they have to mention that basic rule of cooking, but I'm glad they do. Just in case someone didn't get the memo that raw meat or unclean hands will contaminate anything uncooked. I think most of our mamas taught us how to have a clean and bacteria-free kitchen. It's not rocket science. Wash, wash, wash, and wash some more. Then spray some bleach on it!

WE were at a restaurant last night and the waitress was flipping her long hair all over the place, I sure didn't like it!

I am a food service manager. I don't want hair in my food and neither do our customers. My girls are expected to have their hair restrained.
I too watched Bakery Bunch. Not only did they put that cake in that filthy van, she wore the same apron to make the cake, clean the van and set up the cake. If all they find in that cake is a hair it might be a good thing. I told my DH that I would probably never order a cake like that. So this thread cracked me up. Of course if we go out to eat he makes me sit where there is no way I can see the kitchen.
I am an admitted sanitation freak.

As a matter of fact..........just tonight DH and I went to Costco to get some things we needed (wanted). They have those $1.50 hot dogs with free 20 oz. drink......so naturally he took me out to dinner there!!! I was standing in line and mentioned that they were wearing hats and nets on their heads!!!! I haven't seen that in a LONG time!
