What I do when I am not quilting...humoring friends.

I recently texted a friend asking what her favorite "Spirits" were, as she has mentioned several times that she 'drinks' a lot. That question had her and her husband puzzled so he wanted to know 'why? is she making a voodoo doll of you?" Since I thought this was funny when she told me the story, I couldn't resist in making her a little 'voodoo' doll, complete with pins.
This friend is literally terrified of mice and hates them with a passion. Everyone here at works likes to tease her with mice. One printed a picture and hung it on her bulletin board so she could see it all day. One put one on her computer desktop. One even went through the trouble of making a fake mouse, luring her away from her desk, conning her back to her desk and asking her to get a book out of a 'specific' drawer, all while video taping (with his cell phone) her reaction to finding this mouse. She screamed and jumped 3 feet out of her chair. I didn't get to see the actual response from my office but the video was quite comical. She even laughs at it now. She's a good sport.
So it was my turn to get her with a mouse. I added a little more humor to her voodoo doll, by attaching a small mouse with the pink pin of death in it. She loved that the pink pin was in the mouse and not in her. LOL!!
Another small detail in this story came when making it, after getting it stuffed and while working on stitching up the back where I stuffed it from, my 12 yr old son asks .... "well, if its a girl doll, where are its boobs?" My husband and I stopped in our tracks and couldn't help but laugh because this came from the quiet shy son whom we wouldn't never expected that comment to come from. But with that said, I did add a little extra padding up front prior to closing her up. It made it all the more interesting when trying to explain to my friend how her little voodoo doll came about.
Just wanted to share how I spend some my time when I am not quilting. I've gotta admit though, I really like how this little doll turned out.

This is really cute! I love her face and the mouse and story behind it truly make it one of a kind...

This is so cute! I love the distressed boot-cut jeans. They look just like the ones my sister and I wear!

How clever. But I feel for your friend as I have a phobia about rodents.

Your dolls turned out so cute. It is a good thing that your friend has a good sense of humor. I don't like live mice either.

Quiltbeagle 01-08-2012 10:04 AM

That is SO cute! I just love the girl, and the mouse is so small! How on earth did you sew that little thing together? The clothes you made are great! You HAVE to post a tutorial because I'm probably not the only one who wants to make one.

OMG!!! she could have had a heart attack. I can't imagine scaring someone who has such a phopia. I don't like to be scared like that. I don't think it was funny.

caspharm 01-08-2012 11:20 AM

Cute story, cute doll (is she using it on the mouse :)). How did you make the tiny little mouse?

I too thought the cruel jokes played on her were not funny. I did, however, like the doll and was glad to hear she liked it too and had a sense of humor about it.

The doll and mouse are so cute. However, it sounds as if your office mates are quite mean to this woman. She should report these incidents as harrassment and advise her supervisor or the head shed of these shennigans. This sounds so cruel to me.

As a child my 3 older brothers tthought it was funny to put things on me, especially bugs, spiders, mice, frogs, anything that made me cringe and scream and cry. It was horrid! I learned to stop it by means they did not like, but stop it I did.

They were actually made from a pair of my old jeans. After I sewed them together, I thought they were too small to hem so I just left them long but it really made the look. I was happy that I didn't hem them after I put them on her.

One of the ladies in our office said the same thing. The one I made it for, now wants me to teach her how to make them.

Awww - Thank you. I will have to see what I can do about making a tutorial. I hadn't thought about that.
As for sewing the mouse together, it is small. It was done on the machine and by hand.

Adorable.:D

She was ok with my little mouse but no I could never do anything like what the one guy in our office did. I probably would have hurt him. I felt sorry for her when I heard the story, but we all couldn't help but laugh when we saw the video, even she laughed when she saw how she really reacts. They do give her anxiety attacks.

I will see if I can make up a tutorial about the mouse and the doll and share it. My son (he's 19) wants me to make him a mouse so it will give me the perfect opportunity to do it in slowmo - and take pictures as I go along. I'll post back here and let you all know when I have it posted to the tutorial thread.

The doll is cute and clever. Your office is cruel & mean..

The doll is so cute and the mouse looks very realistic (ick). One gal in our office was so afraid of spiders that everytime we would find one (we were in the basement of the office building) we would ask her to go get it. She'd cower in her office until we had killed the beast! Funny was scares people. I hate snakes!

annthreecats 01-10-2012 08:07 AM

That doll is wonderful. Great work. Funny story.

Too cute! I know people with spider phobias like that too.
I used a very small piece of gray fuzzy fur fabric to make the mouse. Had it on my stash to make a sheep with but I see tiny mice in my future now. Son wants one and I will probably make a tutorial of how I did it. So I will probably make a couple backups.
