I just purchased a new refrigerator, because my old one bit the dust. I told the salesman I was disappointed with it because it had only lasted for about 16 years. He told me these new ones only have a life expectancy of 8 to 10 years. Can you believe that???? I didn't buy a cheap one either; I guess I better start saving up for the next one.

I had to get a new one last year...and heard the same thing...
and mine is a good one, too...

Mine is 16 years old too. I expect it to go to refrig heaven at any time. I hate to spend money on appliances. I'd rather by a sewing machine or fabric:)

I got rid of my old Kenmore at 17 yrs. It was still running fine, but we had just moved into a new house & I wanted a new one with water & ice through the door.......what a mistake! I hate this new one (well, it is 6 yrs old now). At first it was freezing all of my produce & when the service guy came out he stuffed a paper towel in some opening between the freezer & fridge. Well, that didn't work (what a surprise) & we didn't want that guy again, so my husband & I started experimenting with duct taping this opening & punching holes in it. We finally found a happy medium where our milk wasn't going bad & our produce wasn't freezing but come on! Duct tape on my new $1000+ refrigerater??!! It has worked fine until we came down to a flood 2 weeks ago so now the water & ice that I wanted so bad isn't hooked up any more. We will attempt to trouble shoot when we get back from our summer travels but for now we will keep the water to it off so we won't get flooded out when we are gone. I hate to say it but I look forward to this one conking out!

Don't tell my washing machine that. It's 24 years old!

A sad fact;things are not made to last and we all know that they could be!

This is called planned obsolescence. If they last like the old ones did the manufactures couldn't sell as many. It's all a money (greed) thing.

i just got rid of one at about 30 years old, replaced it with one a neighbor gave me that has only one door, you have to open it to open the freezer door. Works great.

I still regret getting rid of a waist high commercial ice cream freezer we had in the garage. Thought after all the kids left we wouldn't need it. Still miss it. We gave it to the yard man who had a lot of kids, and he said recently that it had finally conked out and had to take it to the dump. 
DH had it when we married in 1967, and we gave it away in about the 1980s....no idea of how old it was. When it was made they sure didn't know or believe in planned obsolescence, which I view as cheating.

My almost new gas range oven doesn't work unless the temperature is set at 435 or above. The four year old refrigerator freezes up in the back causing a solid ice formation under the bottom vegetable crispers at which time it starts spitting water all over inside the refrigerator. DH had to tear it apart twice and thaw out the back. What a mess! Appliance manufacturers should be proud!

We had to break down recently and get a new refrigerator and heard the same thing. The salesperson kept telling us how much energy the new one would save us. I had my doubts until our electric bill came the following month. Salesman was right our bill went down $15.00 a month because of the new refrigerator.

When I married my DH 31 years ago, he told me that we needed a new refer, although my old one worked. He had measured and said the utility savings would more than pay for it. I thought he was being peculiar, but he was right. Our power bill went down about $50 a month. My very expensive super low power refer we bought 11 years ago died after 6 years. The much cheaper replacement uses almost as little power. There is a lot of variation on this, but DH (AC tech) says keeping the coils etc clean helps motor life up.

Same with wahers and dryers... had to replace the washer that was only 6 years old :(

A roof is even worse. At least you can use a fridge :D

Last year our super expensive washing machine passed away at only 6 1/2 yrs. Replaced it with a cheap machine and will see how long this one lasts. Companies deliberately make appliances to die in just a few years. They make the repair parts so expensive that you throw them out. I hate this waste.

Please don't say roof! Need one! Then my furnace and hit water tank pooped! Getting new one is horrible!!

We replaced our stove and fridge 3 years ago. The ones we replaced had lasted 28 years! I do not like the new....electric smooth-top stove takes forever to bring water to a boil and the fridge does not seem to keep things cold as I would like. But, still do not want to have to replace them for awhile. We have a washer-dryer pair (Maytag) that is 25 years old. We keep babying them along. We will look to replace them later this summer.

so far mine that I got from sears about 12 years ago is still going. It wasn't top of the line after remodeling my kitchen I couldn't afford that. That being said my old fridge (20yrs old) is in the sunroom as a backup. She's getting more tempermental now; she needs to be defrosted or she'll start shutting down. She is a frost free but with her age also came some frost but she still works. Keep up the maintenance and you'd be surprised how long she'll last

We have a GE washer that came with the first house we bought in 1980. It was on an enclosed porch and had frozen over the winter, but still worked. Shortly after we started using we noticed it was emptying slowly. Took the hose off the back and removed an entire long-sleeve men's shirt (not ours). Still working, I think we had to change a belt once.

i think my first one lasted not quite 7 years.. this one is going on 11........
just like a mattress.... 10 yrs tops...

I bought the cheapest of the cheap washing machines I could find 10 years ago still works great -- I so want a shiny new front loader -- but I know that if I replace this one it will die in 5 years or less.

With my new fridge I have noticed that if the freezer gets turned down (colder) everything in my fridge freezes regardless of the fridge setting

We just rid of our 1967 Fridgedaire refrigerator, still ran good but, manual defrost, I hated that and told my Husband it was time to get rid of it. We only used it for drinks and over flow. The one we used for food was moved into it's spot. I love my new one with bottom freezer.

That's what my appliance told me also. They aren't made to last like the old ones.
