I learned how to download free audiobooks from my library onto my laptop so I can listen to them while quilting! :D

I am a VERY happy camper now! Now I don't have to worry if there is nothing good on TV to keep me company whilst I quilt...I just download a book (takes about 10 min. to download) and away I go!

And no hassle driving to the library during their hours or remembering to return them on time, etc. They are automatically returned (and deleted from my computer) at the end of the 2 weeks. If I'm not done reading it, I can just check it out again!

KwiltyKahy 09-05-2010 02:28 PM

Cool. I'm going to check our library to see if they do that. Thanks for the idea.

craftybear 09-05-2010 02:28 PM

that is cool

cjomomma 09-05-2010 02:28 PM

That is cool, I didn't know you could do that.

magpie 09-05-2010 02:31 PM

Learn something new every day. That will be nice especially in the winter.

Quiltforme 09-05-2010 02:38 PM

You can get the kindle for free from amazon for your computer and you can find free ebooks from amazon also I have about 15 Ohhh and it gets better if you are a phone techy you can download the kindle app for your cell and take the books with you.... so why do I need to buy a kindle?? not sure but for free is great!

MzMcKee 09-05-2010 03:17 PM

Kindle is a great option for reading. I do like the idea of an audio book though, it would allow a person to listen while doing something else.

Quiltforme 09-05-2010 03:52 PM

new kindle update allows for hearing also

Lisa 09-05-2010 04:05 PM

You are so lucky, I love audio books! I really enjoy listening to a mystery while sewing!

texas granny 09-05-2010 04:20 PM

We were talking about this just last week at our card game. With the new download system like Kindle and the other ones from sony they have out pretty soon we want have book stores and library.
I have already notice that the music has almost gone to almost nothing at walmart the other day.

barbrdunn 09-05-2010 04:27 PM

How do you get a free Kindle? What is the catch?

earthwalker 09-05-2010 04:31 PM

How cool is that! As much as "technology" is somtimes a pain...just think how far we have come is such a short time.

franie 09-05-2010 04:35 PM

Free books to my mp player would be great. or cd's. I have been buying books because I joined a local book club and we have to read a book a month. There are some good deals on Amazon for everything.

MzMcKee 09-05-2010 05:07 PM

It's not free, but audible.com has a membership fee of $14.95 and you get one free credit to use every month. They can be downloaded to MP3 players.

Going back to the Kindle, is it the reads to you feature? Or, can you now down load audio books too?

I would love to have the Kindle for my general reading and save my Book money for the keepers.

theoldgraymare 09-05-2010 06:51 PM

Quiltforme, how do you get the free kindle for the computer?

Ditter43 09-05-2010 07:30 PM

What a great idea!! I don't think the libraries here do that, but I bet I would take advantage of it if they did! I am listening to "Cell" by Steven King while I am sewing now..... :D

debbieumphress 09-05-2010 08:24 PM

I've read all those books by Charlene Harris... If you can get past the primary subject matter they are pretty good mysteries.

Our library has web access and I just do a direct download from their site to my computer. I can also burn them to a CD to listen to when I travel.

mrspete 09-06-2010 05:36 AM

What's a kindle?

Have you listen to King's book the Dome? Makes you think about just where we are in the grand scope of things.

Kindle is a hand held electronic device about the size of a large paper back but less than an inch thick. You can download and store books on it to create your own electronic reading library. It is a system that allows you to down load the books without a computer any time anywhere you want. With Kindle you can carry around 1000's of book without the bulk.

One of the great things, in my opinion, about Kindle is the eInk, it's a font system that looks and reads like a paper back. And, using an arrow or your finger touch, you turn the pages as you would with a paper back.

Most books download for less than $10, there are 1000s that are free, you can also download magazines and newpapers.

I've been kinda watching the eReaders (generic term) for awhile. Trying to decide if it would be a great stocking stuffer from Santa.

Annz 09-06-2010 05:59 PM

Humm, interesting idea. Thanks

Dee 09-06-2010 06:06 PM

How cool. I'll have to check that out.

champagnebubbles 09-06-2010 06:15 PM

I am going to check out my library

nhlady52 09-07-2010 04:53 AM

It would make a great x-mass gift that keeps on giving. I purchased one for my husband who reads alot. Maybe a book a week or so. Now when someone wants to get him something and don't know what to do, i tell them get a gift certificate from amazon and he gets whateverhe wants to read when he needs a new book. Works out great.

zz-pd 09-08-2010 04:58 PM

That is cool. thank you and God bless.

gloryj8 09-11-2010 12:14 PM

thats neat.. I'm gonna have to check into that..

Butterflyblue 09-12-2010 06:34 PM

I love downloading audiobooks from the library. It's the primary reason I bought an MP3 player, and I listen to a lot more books than music.

I have "read" a lot of books that I wouldn't have time for otherwise.

rhona hodgson 09-19-2010 12:16 AM

What a great idea, will give it a go. :-P
