I am not losing my mind. Something is tapping. If it were near the door, I might think someone is knocking. BUT it is near the lving room window. It's up too high for the cats to be doing it.

Well, are you ready??? It was a woodpecker. This is NOT a tree, bud. Go find a nice dead oak or maple.

It's funny you should say that. I was thinking as I wrote, who is that tapping at my chamber door.

They can be very destructive. They have found an attraction to everybody's wood trim on their house. I'm not sure how to discourage them. I know they'll go after bugs in the wood, but not everybody can have that problem!! Good luck, seems once they've found you, they keep coming back :-D

at my Sister's house south of Houston, there was a red cardinal "knocking" on the octagon window upstairs. almost sounded like the beeps microwaves make when the buttons are pushed. had me looking around up there for quite awhile.

We had that trouble in our old house, not so much where we are now. We did everything we could, but couldn't really find a way to discourage them. You could try the metallic thingies that the farmer puts on the fruit trees, provided you don't mind having them flying on the eaves of your house. Good luck, please let us know if you discover the secret.

We have one that comes and lives in our back yard every Spring. He just taps away all summer long, has become a friend, sorta LOL

I had a similar thing happen earlier this spring. It seems the louder the male woodpecker pecks on things, the better he is at attracting a mate. Anyway, this woodpecker learned that pecking on the metal furnace flue coming out of my roof made the most noise. I was woken up on Saturday morning (after a long night of rock star partying) to this very strange metallic pinging sound. It sounded like it was coming from the basement, but I couldn't find the source. I finally went outside and saw the woodpecker pecking on the furnace flue. I was able to chase him away and go back to bed. Just to have him come back a half hour later. This went on for a couple of hours, until I finally chased him over to the neighbors house and their furnace flue. Man what a racket!

My story!! I sat here at the computor in the early morning when it was still dark and heard this tapping sound, and knew no one was at the door. could not figure out where it was coming from. As daylight approached there was a bluejay tapping on my metal eaves trough. Why a bluejay I could not figure out. But he has returned many mornings since then. But now I know to look for him.
