Other sized hoops won't work. Thanks though.

YOu might want to do a bit of research. I think the multi position hoop will work. Basically, it's 4" wide, but longer and it has multiple latches on the side to attach to the machine. You need to have the design split, either with software or from the digitizer. The machine will only stitch out a 4X4 portion, but when that's done, you reattach the hoop using the next set of gizmos, moving the area to be embroidered up or down, building on the original part completed. I had one for my first 4X4 machine. It takes a bit of practice and it is all dependent on how well the design is split. I would wait until she's comfortable with the 4x4 and general use of the machine first.

There are many designs for 4 x 4 hoop, I have embroidered many T- shirts and quilts with 4 x 4.

Since the 4" machines were the first introduced, there are lots and lots and lots of designs available. Monogramming is also a great thing to do.
Here's a good site to get an idea of designs available:

This is a great site and usually has a selection of designs on sale (I bought some of their Christmas designs for $1.25 each, very cute.)

I am considering this same machine (Brothers HE1). Just saw sale for today only at Hancock for $299. How does your G'daughter like the machine? I really don't know if I will enjoy embroidery and thought this will be the most economical way to try it. Any one else with a review or comment on the HE1?

Thank you
