I live just 20 miles east of the Colorado border. Our town is dwindling quickly. We have a technical college. We have 6 motels (don't know how they all surviive) and WalMart is the only grocery or department store we have. It use to be a busy town with the railroad and sugar beets but now there is little to nothing.

Have you thought of maybe holding a quilt show at the library to drum up interest in quilts and quilting? Have a quilt show during the Corn Festival? I am new to this groups so that is why my reply is a little late.

I live in sunny Central Oregon. Bend, OR to be exact. We are on the east side of the Cascade Mountains so our weather is much better than the Willamette Valley. Bend is a beautiful place. We have a lot going on here too. In the winter the mountains are the draw. There is so much to do. Mt. Bachelor ski resort is just 20 miles from downtown Bend. In the summer the mountains also are one of the draws. There are numerous mountain lakes, camping, hicking, mountain biking, climbing the mountains and much more.

We have a very vibrant downtown. We have 4 downtown festivals, one for each season. In the summer we have a wonderful car show, the Flash Back Cruise. It completely takes over the downtown area. We have a wonderful Saturday market.

Then of course the quilt stores. There are numerous quilt stores in the Central Oregon area. Of course there is the Sister's Quilt festival in July. Sisters is just a few miles west of Bend. It is a week long event with numerous classes with with world class quilt artists. The climax of the event is the Saturday Quilt show. Quilts hang from every building in town. The little town of 1100 swells to over 40,000. It is the highlight of the year.

I moved from suburbs of Atlanta to a Gated Community in Sweetwater (the middle of a pasture field). Talk about culture shock for my kids. Town rolls up the sidewalk at 9 pm. We have 4 lights and lots of antique businesses. YOu can get pretty much anything you need within a 20 mile radius. VERY High unemployment rate. Home of The Lost Sea and the Largest Flea Market in the South. The Smoky Mountains are just over the hill.
Everyone is kin to everyone else and I am still "that woman frum Atlanta." That said I have made a few friends and for the most part people are very friendly and will go out of their way to help you.
It is about and hour drive to Knoxville and family. It is a 2 hour drive north to the outlaws- ahhem- in-laws. We get all 4 seasons (tooo Much Winter this year) & have wildlife out the window constantly. Wouldn't want to go anywhere else.

McKinney, Tx, a small town about 30 miles N of Dallas - Lovely area with a small town feel - love it - lots of stores on the square and great restaurants.

I live in a town, New Rockford, ND the population is about 1400. the average age is about 50 but we have a neat little quilt shop. she has people coming from all over ND. it is really neat. she also has a website i will have to try and find it. I work at the post office and hopefully will be retireing july 1 cant wait. all the time in the world to quilt. we have a neat little town

I live smack dab in the middle of everything. But as soon as I am able to retire, i am moving to nowheresville. (were ever that is), someplace quiet and no one around, hopefully warmer their than here in the winter. Does such a place exist?? I spent a lot of my childhood on my grandparents farm it was soooo very nice. Now that area is built up, it use to be rural Mississippi. (well somewhat)

funny you asked :roll: Our town is having their "perch festival" this weekend and believe me the locals leave the town to the tourist...I belong to 2 guilds both about 15/20 miles away in outlying towns...Our town has one LQS but no guild. haven't really figured out why. Not much shopping, one movie theater that modernized and now shows 2 at the same time. lots of pizza parlors and bars but not much else...fast food, can't leave those out. When we really want to shop we travel 60 miles to a JoAnns and malls..

You are in a pretty part of Missouri I grew up 45 miles south of your town and miss it. I now live north of Fort Wood and it's nothing to brag about. We have more beauty shops (8) than anything else, 2 banks, Post Office, 2 gas stations, 1 grocery store, and 2-3 eating places (?) and a school. No empolyment expect the Army Base ,Rolla or drive to Jeff City. Not much for young people to do here, but drive the back roads :cry:

I live in Houston, Texas. All if can say is we have everything somewhere not far. I came from a very small country area. I graduated with a class of 20. Yes 20 students. Moved here. Talk about a culture shock. Wants to retire back home.
