If I feel a cold coming on rest is the best thing for me, I lie on the couch or in bed with soft pillows and a quilt and fall asleep. If I do get a cold and really feel bad those little red Sudafed work best for me. I don't take them every 4 hours just a dose and then to bed or couch. Hope I'm not jinxing myself by saying that I don't usually get colds probably because I'm retired and don't spend most of my day in a crowded workplace - I worked at a college and my 'office area' was in an open space and everyone seemed to pass or stop by my office.

Steam inhalation, vitamin C and sleeping with high pillows so that congestion does not settle on chest. Licorice as an expectorant and horse radish and Irish moss for the throat.

Er, what do you do with the moss please?

QuilterChick 10-12-2011 05:09 AM

Lots of fluids, lots of naps, a comfy sofa or recliner and a pile of quilting magazines should do it.

BettyM 10-12-2011 05:45 AM

Hot dark tea always helps me.

Phyllis42 10-12-2011 05:57 AM

Most of the above ... hot Toddy, lots of Vit. C, Coricidin D, sleep, chicken noodle soup.

catrancher 10-12-2011 06:08 AM

A lot of whining and moaning.

Wonnie 10-12-2011 06:30 AM

Heated Vernors gingerale (and only Vernors) with a shot of whiskey, a squirt of lemon juice and dash of nutmeg on top, a bowl of Mrs. Grass's Chicken Noodle soup. We, also, steam our chest, smear Quiachol on top and cover with a piece of flannel and top with a white T-shirt. Works wonders. Our family has used this for years. The only problem is I haven't been able to locate Quiachol for many years so had to
swith to Vick's salve. Does anyone know of a pharmacy that still compounds Quiachol???

mountain deb 10-12-2011 06:34 AM

I am starting to drink vinegar water. It changes the ph balance in your throat and those bugs cannot survive.

:D :D :D I've been doing that for two days. I guess I need more Jim Beam or the brandy

Tink's Mom 10-12-2011 06:58 AM

I feel a whine coming on.....
I don't have time to get this cold...now it is going into a really nice cough...
The wedding is in 9 days, her dress isn't finished yet...I'm not completely sure what I'm wearing...and I feel like #$%^.
Have to go and get hair cut and colored...too much grey in my dishwater blonde.

Iamquilter 10-12-2011 07:40 AM

If I get a cold it is usually a head cold, stuffed up so I take a hot drink, (shot of whiskey, honey, and nutmeg,) drink it down and go to bed and sweat it out and it is gone the next day.

QuilterMomma 10-12-2011 07:58 AM

I do the menthol and sock neck and joints rub, alka seltzer cold medicine, and an herbal tea to sip on. You need to go to the tea shop for the herbs for the cold remedy. Within a couple days, cold is gone and you feel so refreshed. The remedy is milk thistle, cleavers, golden seal, cats claw, slippery elm and brewed till dark. It is a bit bitter, but works wonders. My daughter has a cold right now, I did not notice soon enough so she may have to suffer a couple of days before it is over. It is best to catch that cold before it comes on. The hot chocolate and schnapps is good to keep the chills off. My mom always did the hot toddy as well, but not a big whiskey drinker and can't get it down. Gave the little one the sock therapy and herbal tea therapy and she is over the sore throat over night, now for those sinuses. I hope you get better and take care. You will get it one. sometimes we have to take a little rest to refresh and can work twice as hard when we feel better. Do not stress anymore, it is not helping you get better. It will all come together nicely and the wedding will be beautiful just as they always are. That dress is going to get done, just going to be the day before the wedding.

pugmom 10-12-2011 08:27 AM

I gave up meat and have not had a cold in 20 years.

Honeynga 10-12-2011 08:51 AM

I seldom get a cold; have sinus and allergy issues;however about 4 years ago I was sick with a cold and just couldn't get rid of it. I remembered my grandmother used to run my chest, front and back, under arm pit and bottom of my feet with Vicks Vapo Rub.....Sent child to store, got Vicks, rubbed my self down and encased my self in socks and flannel pj.s...within 24 hours I was much much better. Haven't been that sick sense but really think it helped !

What are your home remedies for a cold?

Hot lemonade sweetened with honey and spiked with tequila helps to loosen up the congestion so you can cough it out. Of course, if you still feel bad you can add tequila until you don't care anymore. LOL!

that's interesting. I've heard that if you eat meat etc and your system is too acid, then you get colds and gain weight etc. But if you give up meat products and stay alkaline you're healthier. But I love beef and chicken!! So its difficult for me.

Geri B 10-12-2011 11:14 AM

vicks on the bottom of feet, white socks before bedtime......and it works!!!!!

Honeynga 10-12-2011 11:17 AM

My grandma did bottom of feet, armpits, chest and back, sometimes a flannel piece safety pinned into pjs....but always white cotton socks and flannel pjs ! Now, i sort of remember my grandmother talking about some kind of bags she had to wear around her neck as a child....called something like: phonetic: ask fit ity.......must be a very old, possibly southern, folklore custom....

Oh, that phonetic "word" brought back a memory of a neighbor I once had.....I don't remember the actually word either, but I do know it is/was some sort of natural herb.....well, aspirin's origin is willow bark so there must be something said for "natural remedies".......

Thank you for responding, so it wasn't a dream ! Really she talked about having to wear this bag around her neck...just can't remember exactly for, but said it smelled bad. She also said that HER grandmother would give all of the grandkids big doses of oil....castor oil ? Remember my grandmother tried to make me drink castor oil in orange juice and I gagged and threw up....to this day can't drink orange juice !!!

So for the older timers out there....ever heard of cat nip tea ? When my oldest who is now 42 was a baby and cried all the time...called my MIL late one night, she got out of bed, had her husband drive her several miles away to an all night drug store.....came to our apt; mixed up a brew of cat nip tea, added sugar and whiskey to give to my crying child...by the time she did all this the child was asleep...after they left I poured it out....

Well in the wee hours the crying started again, what did I do, made up a brew of cat nip tea...don't remember any more; don't know if I gave it to her or she went back to sleep.....All I can say now is YIKES, can't believe I would even think of that !

Vat 10-12-2011 11:50 AM

Hot Lemonade is great for a sore throat.

AlwaysQuilting 10-12-2011 01:20 PM

asafetida bags around the neck (or asfidity). Not sure of the spelling.
My grandmother also tried this with us till we refused.

oldswimmer 10-12-2011 01:22 PM

I use a Nettie pot to rinse my sinus'......it really shortens any kind of cold for me...especially if I do it right away when I "feel" something coming on.

Boy me too. When I go to town,I wash in the bathrooms along the way,and at every stop as soon as I get in the car I use sanitizing hand wash and also always wipe my cart down as soon as I get inside before I go to start shop. And wash imeadiatly when I get home. And also after I put everything away.I haven't had a cold or flu in 7 yrs now.

I, also, take Zicam and it does work great. I seldom have a cold, perhaps one every 3 or 4 yrs., but when I know I'm coming down or even think I am getting a cold, out comes the Zicam. When I do have one I usually end up with pneumonia or in the hospital. I can't take chances. Of course the usual extra things such as rest, liquids, etc. Don't forget the flu shots. Have already had mine.

Yes, and I add L-lysine just if I feel symptoms coming, it usually always works.

madamekelly 10-12-2011 03:17 PM

Sniveling, whining, crabbing, and washing my hands. I hate 'sharing' it.

time2quilt 10-12-2011 04:10 PM

The moment I feel the slightest indication of a cold, I take 2 Alka Seltzer Plus tablets disolved in water. I am a firm believer that it has prevented me from having a cold.

Iraxy 10-12-2011 04:25 PM

Home made chicken soup with wide noodles and lots of garlic and REST, lots of it. Feel brand new the next day or so.

Iraxy 10-12-2011 04:26 PM

Oh yes, and lots of water too. However, my favorite remedy for a chest cold is Vicks Vaporub. My husband calls it Willie away since he will not even come in the room when I am all slathered in the stuff.

grannypat7925 10-12-2011 04:26 PM

Vitamin C and Zinc

ajohn52 10-12-2011 05:07 PM

Hot tea and honey. Hall's lozenges. Lots of rest.

katigirl 10-12-2011 09:09 PM

Doctor myself with cold meds and lots and lots of rest to let my body do the work.

We had cod liver oil...and in the past few years I have taken it every other evening just before bedtime, one tbsp mixed in orange juice...just swallow fast and don't breathe in!!!! It is good for you-hair, nails, sort of like a lub job to keep the inner joints working without creaking.......also a good source of Vitamin D .....just don't overdo as D is not eliminated and can cause problems if overdosed......

I have heard about catnip tea, but used camomile tea..and still do. Relaxing and good to take if not sleeping well, kind of a natural sleeping pill.

RE: Chicken soup/cold somewhere I read about it actually having healing prowers for colds, so keep one in the freezer and when the stuffy comes, start cooking, or better yet have someone else make it. It must be homemade, not store bought!!!!

arimuse 10-13-2011 11:12 AM

home made from scratch chicken soup! hot tea and lemon/honey, asprin
for really bad bad colds/flu - the above and theraflu nighttime at night, daytime for day.

had that stupid bird flu last winter, home alone! It makes you cough non stop for about 4 weeks! I thought I broke ribs coughing so much. Anyway, remembered what my grandmother/ mom did when we were small -

1 Tbl each: butter, whiskey (any), lemon, honey. Heat it all to melted in a pot coat a spoon and lick it hot. It kept me from coughing for 15 -20 min straight at a time. sharet

sylviasmom 10-13-2011 03:33 PM

Hot lemonade with a shot of whiskey. Drink enough of this and having a cold, what cold?

Has anyone heard of putting minced garlic on the bottoms of your feet in a muslin bag? You have to be careful or the garlic will actually burn your skin. It's supposed to cure a cold.

I also have a girlfriend that will eat a teaspoon of minced garlic every day and swears by it. Her kids have not been sick in a few years.
