Where to dine in Shipshewana, In
 

Is there a 'must do' place to eat in Shipshewana that one should not miss. I will be visiting sometime in November and want it to be a great trip for my sister. I haven't seen her in 7 years and we will be traveling there. Is there anything else that we shouldn't miss. I have a handicap and can't do a lot of extended walking so I am trying to do the very best things and not waste my time or energy.

The Blue Gate in Shipshewana is very good. They also have plays most days in their upstairs theatre. Also, a once in a lifetime experience can be had at Das Essenhaus in Middlebury. It is located 8 miles west of Shipshewana on US 20. They also have many shops around the restaurant and their bakery is to die for. Of course there is lots of great shopping in Shipshewana. Most shopping is handicap accessible. You might want to have some type of walker that you can sit on to help with your walking problem. Yoder department store is worth visiting if you sew or quilt, as is Lolly's located in the old hotel located on the street behind Blue Gate. Have a great visit!

If you are able to handle some walking, Lollys Quilt Shop in the Davis Hotel building, and Yoders Dept. store are both great.

The Blue Gate is fabulous. You can order from the menu or family style. Then for dessert, go over to the bread box. They have a really good carrot cake! Friday's in Shipshewanna are busy since that is the horse auction day. If you need fabric, there is Yoder's, Cotton Corner, Lolly's and A Little Bit of Lolly's. Have a great time!! It is my favorite place to go. I call it a happy place!!

Just have a great time. I miss that area a lot.

Das Essenhaus in Middlebury The best family style....Great noodles, broasted chicken, roast beef so tender, mashed potatoes gravy, they will even give you a piece of pie to go. As someone posted above they have lots of little shops on their campus. A great Bakery too.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I saw Das Essenhaus but thought it might be too far. Since it is so recommended I will work it in. Thanks for the suggestion of the walker too. It helps to know from people who have first hand knowledge. I looked it up online but they always make everything sound like it is the very best but some things are what one would want to do as top list, since I won't be able to do everything. I will keep my agenda open enough to take in any unexpected, exciting goings on. This will be a once in a lifetime visit and a place I have always wanted to go. It makes it easier to plan with great first hand suggestions.

If you want a neat shopping experience in addition to those listed above (Das Essenhaus, Blue Gate, Lolly's and Yoders) go to E&S grocery. It's where locals shop and they have a lot of bulk type foods, good cheese and more sprinkles and toppings for cookies and cakes than I've ever seen. They also have antique pedal cars and such around the ceiling area that are fascinating to look at. They do not take credit - only cash and check. When you are Yoders be sure to check out both sides. There is a hardware/home side and a soft goods side with clothing and fabric and more fabric. There is also a fabric shop in the same parking lot as Yoders (can't remember the name) that has a nice selection of batiks.

The Cotton Corner is the store in the same parking lot as Yoder's. Batiks are really nice! Have a great time.
If you are both into quilting or sewing, the Calico Point in Goshen is a good fabric store too. (Yoder's is number one!)

I love hardware stores. Awesome suggestions and I will be checking them out. I am SO excited!
