My little town in CT is distributing IPads to all HS students next year - most textbooks will be downloadable, so the cost zeroes out. Isn't that amazing!

Candela59 05-04-2011 12:29 PM

I have a nook with WIFI and 3G network capabilities and I love it! I've had it for about a year now and use it daily.

PABerard 05-04-2011 12:29 PM

You must try them out and see for yourself. I have had a Kindle from the start and love it. I love that it is not back lit and I do not like touch screens, so the Kindle is perfect for me. My SIL has an Ipad and loves it. So it is definitely personal preferences as they all are amazing!

But I would say don't get too caught up on the free stuff from the library. You can't get every book OR a book when you want it. But I have gotten a freebie and I was happy I didn't buy it. Good luck. ~ Pat

I have the Kindle and i love it. Didn't even shop for others because of the fact that kindle reader is like reading paper and i didn't want any more screen lights like a computer when i am reading for long hours. My eyes are getting enough from screens. Also there is tons of books/games that are free on amazon that you can get. I got the one for $189 so it has 3G and WiFi also so i can browse the internet too (which i don't usually do). I bought it for reading purposes only to carry everywhere.

Fantastic!

I remember when I had to drive car pool and I would watch some of the kids, especially the petite girls, bent over double trying to carry their backpacks loaded with heavy textbooks! This will save a lot of backs!

Color is great for kids books, magzines and newspapers. I have a Nook Color and like it - but am not sure it was worth the extra money for the Color part.
If you want to be able to get (free) books downloaded from your library, ask there what is easiest to use with their downloading software. If you plan to purchase books, try out downloading from the primary source offering the books you may purchase.
There are a few differences (wt, etc) beyond that, but try to determine ahead of time how you plan to use it and make your choice based on how well the one you want meets your needs.

I have a Kindle and I took it on our Carnival Cruise with us. Saw lots of folks on board with one as well, sitting out in the sun reading. They are absolutely wonderful for outside time, it is like reading a regular page with no glare. I've gotten lots of free books as well as cookbooks and a few games on mine. I've purchased 2 games for mine for waiting rooms and such. The charge lasts a super long time. We were on the cruise for 5 days plus travel back and forth to the port and I never even brought the charger with me. I charge mine about once a month or so. LOVE IT! ! !

I started out with a nook. My hubby recently bought me the new I pad. I love both. If you can afford the I pad, it is far more versatile because of the variety of applications available. Also, yet, go color on the nook.

I've looked at Nook, Kindle and Pan-Digital. Color or no?

dakotamaid 05-04-2011 02:42 PM

I have the basic NOOK, love it. My daughter got it for me for Christmas and she checked with my local library first to see what would be compatible with their ebooks. I read all the time and haven't bought a book yet.

Lyncat 05-04-2011 03:07 PM

I love my Kindle dx.

pdunn56 05-04-2011 03:13 PM

love my Kindle also... I also have a discontinued Sharper Image Literati that is junk but that I bought to use with library e-books but now Amazon will have that capability on Kindle by year end so kindle gets my vote . Save color for an Ipad or tablet computer type thing. if she just wants to read books, Kindle can't be beat.
I'm sure she will love whatever you get. Oh Amazon also announced that Walmart will be selling Kindles I think beginning sometime this week so you can feel it and test it out.

Mornigstar 05-04-2011 04:05 PM

Got a "Literati" made by Sharper Image -Bought because it was s sss oooo cheap. Does same as Kindle or Nook =I need more time to read .
Always reading this forum instead. Hubby can put the screen on the laptop to read which he thinks is great.
color is OK --I even use it laying in bed.

I love my Kindle. I often read 2-3 books a day, and most are free or .99 from Amazon.

virgwid 05-04-2011 04:44 PM

I had a sony reader for years. wouldn't go there now. I am the wrong one to ask about the kindle - I am boycotting amazon. I have all my books now from barnes and noble - the nook. don't actually have the nook, as I don't need it. I now read all my books on my smartphone. If I have a book that has photos, charts, etc, I use my lap top. If I ever buy another ereader, it would be the nook. Just really enjoying reading on my phone now. Virg

O my gosh!!! I started the night by reading the quilting stuff - then found your post... O my - I had downloaded the Apple Kindle app on my laptop but didn't know how to use it!! Well - I've now downloaded several great books!!! Thanks to you - I now know how to use this app!!! It's wonderful. I can read my Anne of Green Gables! (I had downloaded it as a podcast free book too.) I only wanted to do quilting stuff tonight!!! YIKES!! Thanks again!!

I have the Pocket size eReader from Sony and I love it. Small enough to put in my purse, and carry with me. I can get books anywhere. The only downside to it (not for me though) is you must have a computer to charge it. Since you are here with us, obviously it shouldn't trouble you either. I chasrge mine about once a week, and I read it all the time, while 'waiting' for the next thing I am free to do. Price was right around eighty dollars.

SamSew 05-05-2011 03:35 AM

I have an Android Galaxy Tab, which is like the Ipad, and I love it. Bought DH a Pandigital for Christmas and hated it, returned it and gave DH my Sony reader. If you want just a reader, we really liked the Sony Reader. I have the Kindle and Nook apps on my Tab, plus I put the bible on it also. Never go anywhere without it.

michelehuston 05-05-2011 03:43 AM

I have a Nook, that I received for Christmas. I had no desire to have one as I enjoy the feel of the book and turning of the pages. It's ok. Not a huge fan, and definately would not have spent the money myself.

There are thousands of free books available too that will load on to Kindle. You can get thousands of 'classics' at gutenberg.com for any e-reader you purchase. Keep in mind if you purchase a Nook or another brand, you may not be able to down load books from Amazon.
Having an e-reader that is back lit (like a computer screen) makes it easier to read in bed, but the bright light may actually keep you awake longer. There are lights that will clip on to your e-reader making it much more like reading a printed page.
If you can go to Barnes & Nobel or Borders and look at what they have, it might help you decide. Do your research to find what features you might like and who has the best price. Good luck and enjoy your new e-reader.

Not exactly true...there are several sites you can get Kindle books from, you just have to watch the formatting. Kindle books are in a .mobi file. You would have to download these books to a computer, then connect your Kindle to the computer and "drag" the book into the Kindle...

I have the Sony from Wal-Mart. No bells and whistles to speak of, but it is very user friendly, has a lot of storage (had 130 books on it), and fits nicely in my purse. Love it.

juliea9967 05-05-2011 06:27 AM

That is amazing. It is a fantastic idea, and I hope it works. When I first got my Kindle ebooks were very cheap, supposedly because ebooks were a lot cheaper to produce. Some how that has all changed. Sorry to say that hasn't made any difference to me. I still love being able to carry many books with me wherever I go, and being able to read them any time/anyplace that I want to. I do all of my reading on my iPad 2 now, cause I like it better, but my Kindle was my first ebook reader and will always hold a special place in my heart.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Kindle. Absolutely no glare on screen. Easy to make type larger for old eyes. Kindle can read to me while I am quilting or driving. Books are downloaded almost instantly from Amazon. Best sellers are $9.99 but lots of classics are free. Fits easily in my purse and goes with me everywhere. Love it so much that I bought one for each of my adult children, both of whom are avid readers.

Nancy Rae 05-05-2011 07:37 PM

Kindle and I love it. I have also downloaded several free ebooks. I realy like the ability to enlarge the print. No glare outside. It is not color.

judyyoungs 05-05-2011 07:59 PM

My best friend and I both purchased a Nook at the same time. Some of the books we purchase can be shared between us, and that is a savings. However, the cost of these books has risen much higher than expected and B&N used the low cost of books at the time as a selling point. But we are not sorry about the purchase.

I have a Kindle and it's my favorite possession other than my Brother 4000D. Right now I have 146 books loaded into it and have only bought 4 of those. I belong to a daily blog newsletter that sends out the titles of the books Amazon is offering free and they have quite a selection. New authors, indie authors, business topics, novels, biographies, children's books....you name it. I also like that Amazaon archives the books for you after you have read them so you can go back to re-read or to look something up if you want to. My Kindle goes with me everywhere, especially if I know I will be waiting for something. I also love it for on-the-plane reading. Lightweight and the screen has no glare so you can read outdoors if you like.

I have the Nook and I love it! The Nook allows me to download from the public library so I really don't have to purchase many books. Once again, just love it!

My DIL has a Nook and she loves it. She can download books from the library.

I have two nooks; one black n white w/3g and the color. I only use the color now and I love it. There was a thread earlier today that had a lot about them so if you search you can find alot on it. If you want the ereader but not for taking on the road w/you most stores like B&N, Sony and Borders have free ereaders you can down load on your pc. Best feature of Nook (any of 3 versions) Barnes and Noble doesn't care who you buy your books from so they support mulitple formats, you can read in the dark and also outside and I love the color; lots of free to cheap apps for it now. Check out the other threads that have been posted

I have the Nook Color. LOVE IT!! It's back lit so I can read at night. It has awesome apps and games, and I find that even NEW books on the bestseller's list are cheaper than the tradional hardcovers are. I also love that the Nook Color is expandable with an SD card. I have all of my pictures and music on it too. I check my e-mail, play games, and I can adjust font and lighting to suit me. I know that it's a bit pricier than some other e-books but I think it was well worth it.
