My boyfriend talked about this book he's been looking for called "The Howling" by Gary Brandner. I guess they based a movie on it back in the 80's, which he loves, but then heard the movie is hardly anything like the book. So he's been looking for the book and has not been able to find it. We looked through the library's database...couldn't find it within the libraries in western Wisconsin. So we looked through
WISCAT (which includes all of the libraries within the state as well as some ones out of state). Couldn't find it there either, which is weird because I have never did search on WISCAT and not found what I was looking for. The book was published in the late 70's and its out of print so we can't find a copy anywhere.

Finally found copies of the book on amazon.com. Here's the problem: the banged up used copies are $55 minimum. The "like new" one is $100. The two brand new ones are $129.95 and $254.48. And the used hardcover edition is a whooping $219.41.

Why must finding the perfect Christmas present be so difficult? I want to get him the new copy, but its so freaking expensive. Then again, for my ex-boyfriend, I was making a quilt that's probably going to exceed $300 once done and did not give a crap about the costs. lol. Guess I'm a real quilter afterall: hate spending more than $100 on a single item but will easily spend the same amount of money for supplies for one quilt without a second thought.

That is ridiculous!!! Don't sweat it, get him something else. :D

I found one paperback for $31.00 @ http://www.alibris.com. I have purchased from this source and would again.

Sometimes my quilt expenses are spread out over more time, so it doesn't seem as pricey as it really is. Sorry the book costs so much. Must be a collector's item! Would sure make a nice gift, though.

I would gethim the paperback that Magpie found!

I'm wondering if my DD has this book???? I have read it too and seen the movie. Have you tried the thrift shops? Next time I go to mine I can check and see if they have it and I will ask DD too. Just give me a few days and I will get back to you.

You are so creative you should make him a quilt of the book cover. You won't mind the cost of that and it will be a unique gift!

Try those sources people mentioned. I have also had frustration trying to find out of print books. If not I bet you will come up with something else that's special :)
Good luck!

There are two copies available on Bookmooch.com

It is a book trading site. You would have to have some books to trade. They give you 1/10 of a point for every book you list. So, if you aren't a current member, sign up, list 10 books and there is the point you need to get the book in trade. One copy lists the condition and one does not. At least it is a start.

Not sure if you can see this without signing in:

I trade on here all the time.

Christmas shouldn't difficult at all. It is not about the gifts we give or get it is in the fact that on that day a Savior was born. Most people seem to lose sight of that.

I am off my soap box.

If you find a paperback edition, maybe get the sequel, The Howling II for him also? :D:D:D

Christmas is as complicated as you want to make it.

Once my youngest daughter drove 50 miles one way in a blizzard to buy a copy of the DVD,"O Brother Where Art Thou? for her dad's Christmas present. That was all he had asked for.

If ANYTHING I can just get him the new one and say its his birthday AND Christmas present (his birthday is on the 23rd). Normally I wouldn't condone combining the birthday and Christmas gift into one if the person's birthday was either close or on Christmas (to me that's sort of weak...least get two separate gifts even if one is like a stocking stuffer or a small gift), but this might end up being freakishly expensive so may have to be a hypocrite just this once and get one big birthday/Christmas gift.

But I will take a look at the other websites and see what they got. It will have to wait when he's too busy working on his film editing thesis and he's not paying attention to a thing I'm doing.
