Windows 10

Anyone downloaded Windows 10? Pros & Cons?

I just downloaded it about an hour ago but have Not had time to see what all it does & does Not do.

Just wondering....Thanks.

Tiggersmom 07-31-2015 12:35 PM

Not me......I'm still on 7-8????? Give an update when you get it figured out.

Chasing Hawk 07-31-2015 12:39 PM

I haven't downloaded it yet either. But I did hear you can not turn off auto updates or even be notified before they download. I like to choose what I update on Windows, especially that cloud program. Since I don't use it I don't want it on my computer.
It supposedly conflicts with Nvidia video cards, which I use in my gaming rig. My laptop it doesn't matter cause it just for browsing and taking on trips.

Quilty-Louise 07-31-2015 01:01 PM

I have been running Windows 10 (insider technical review) since about
February.

Personally I like it, but than my computer is only about 1-1/2 years old
so it is a fairly updated (or at least it was when I bought it last year).

In my household I am usually the LAST person to do update to new OS
but this time I had it long (2-1/2 months) before my hubs.

I have not had any problems or conflicts with any program I have installed
on my computer. However I am still waiting to be able to get it installed on
my laptop and netbook.

We were told at Best Buy that we could reserve a copy of it and then hold that for up to a year before we installed it, so I think that's what we'll do.

citruscountyquilter 08-01-2015 04:45 AM

I reserved a free copy and it downloaded but when I went to install it it wouldn't install. Still haven't figured out the problem yet but plan to use it if I can get it to work. My computer was new at Christmas.

I installed it a couple of days ago, and I was okay for the first day, and then it crashed......it's in for service as I write this......

I'm going to wait until I can try it in a store on a DESKTOP. Windows 8 was probably never looked at by anyone over 30 or on any platform that wasn't easily portable. My guess is that if 10 is okay (and wait for the reviews - maybe in AARP) you baby that computer because everything else is going to be in the cloud. Around here clouds usually - but not much this year - have rain. Water is bad for computers

I installed Windows 10 on my laptop and it seems to be running fine. The laptop was upgraded from Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium, it took about a 1/2 hour to install.

I turned off several features I didn't like:
wireless password sharing for guests on your network.
Something that had to do with Social Media, which I do not use.
I asked to be notified when to restart after updates. (I wish I had more control over that)
And several other privacy invading items. I don't want Microsoft to mess with my browsing habits.
And on the start menu, several things got clicked off.

I am waiting awhile to install it on my gaming rig. NVIDIA released a patch to help with Windows 10.

Did Windows 10 replace your Internet Explorer browser? I read that it was being replaced with something called Edge? Also, I thought I understood that Windows 10 removed Windows Media Player, thus no longer reading your dvds/optical drive??

I don't normally use explorer unless I have to. Windows 10 did pin an icon for "Edge" on my task bar, I promptly removed it. To play a DVD I had to right click on the DVD drive and select either Windows DVD player or Gateways Clear.fi media player.

Browsing the web isn't any faster. Neither is the time it takes to start up or restart my laptop. I can only imagine how long it's going to take on my desktop.

maviskw 08-01-2015 06:37 PM

I have signed up for Windows 10, but haven't been given the opportunity to install it yet. I'll be watching this thread. I hate new stuff, and it seems I barely get used to one thing and they want me to learn something new. RATS!

BizyStitches 08-02-2015 07:01 AM

I requested the 'free' Windows 10, but I have not gotten the okay that it is ready to download. I find what others have to say very interesting. I'm looking forward to having it so I hope it will be worth the wait. I'll be watching for more comments.

fangman 08-02-2015 07:23 AM

I have installed Windows 10 and it was easy. I had 7, so it looks a lot like that.

IBQUILTIN 08-02-2015 08:34 AM

So far I really love it. Once in a while the screen will freeze up for a minute or two, but otherwise, I have had no problems at all. I love the "ask me anything" tab

tessagin 08-02-2015 08:40 AM

Right now with my line of work, I have to wait to see if it's compatible with our MLS board. So I'm waiting. Have heard to many problems with it so far.

shasta5718 08-02-2015 08:44 AM

I didn't install because they had a notice that you might be charged for time. When I asked about it in comments they didn't bother to answer.

ManiacQuilter2 08-02-2015 08:48 AM

I heard the tech expert to wait until they got the bugs fixed from the program. I am still running XP and loving it.

vschieve 08-02-2015 09:13 AM

I run Windows on my Mac, as it has dual processors via Boot Camp. My 2008 model Mac is too old to run Windows 8, so to run Windows 10 would mean a new computer.

Cybrarian 08-02-2015 09:34 AM

My IT guy at work said 10 is a mash up of the things people (no idea who) liked best about Windows 7 & 8. I hate most everything about 8 as it was designed primarily for touch screens which my laptop is not. I do know the Start button is back in 10 thankfully.

DonnaFreak 08-02-2015 10:09 AM

I read a tech article on it just a few days ago. It said to not download it if you have an older computer. it also said you have no use for it if you use your computer mainly for checking email, websites, and social media. Hope this helps! 😊

Windows 10

Dell Concierges told me just this week that some computers are not compatible with W10. They checked mine, and mine isn't, but I could have them make it compatible. I am in no hurry to move up from W7. but went on a waiting list.

I have it and so far I really dislike it. It seems to have overtaken everything and lost many of my apps.

MarleneC 08-02-2015 05:00 PM

I haven't but on the desktop I keep getting choices of when to install it and they are only 3 days at a time--not 2 months or so or whenever. Have heard various people say they've had to reinstall virus programs, one lady today said hers wouldn't install as it had a problem with the internet, etc and she restored to her prior system, there have also been a number of patches to fix things and there is a site on yahoo that tells how to shut off the invasive nosy areas. https://www.yahoo.com/tech/s/windows...130502898.html

maviskw 08-02-2015 05:59 PM

From what I am hearing, I think I will not upload the Windows 10. My computer is 3 years old, and I am doing just fine with Windows 7.

ArchaicArcane 08-02-2015 09:47 PM

I'm a computer tech and I won't move to Win10 until it's a little more mature. I generally have a rule that if it's made by Microsoft, it has to be in Service Pack 1 before I'll move to it, or recommend it to clients.

I'm also waiting to make sure I have time to try to troubleshoot if some of my legacy software doesn't work. Right now, I'm running some Janome embroidery software that they stopped supporting as of Vista on my Win8.1 machine. I'm reasonably sure that Win10 will be an added challenge. ;)

I'm past 30 and have it on one of my machines...

Please be careful with that machine! Microsoft stopped supporting XP more than a year ago: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/wind...f-support.aspx

This means that any new security problems that have come to light since then have NOT been fixed. You no longer get updates for the machine and it could be very insecure. At the very least, I wouldn't do anything that involves financial transactions on it.

Reserved a copy, but have no intention of downloading it at this time.

deedum 08-03-2015 03:26 AM

I just reserved a copy also. Probably wont download it, as my computer is about 4 yrs old and time for a new one. I got to read up on all this newer win10 and all.

I downloaded it over the weekend, tried it and went back to Windows 7.
I didn't like the format and I couldn't
find many of my pages. I played with it for awhile and found 2 of my regular apps missing and my Norton's. I found it too frustrating having to search for something that used to be so easy to use-

Me to a "T" :D

I'm running System 7 and am happy with it. For what I do, I have no need to update.
