Windows 10 ?

I have two computers, one has sent me the notification that I can download Windows 10, the other has no such notification on it even though it is compatible with W10. Are you able to only get one edition of 10 if you have multiple computers?

I'm afraid to download the 10 edition because I can boot up my computer, get my email, search articles but beyond that I'm totally lost as far as computer tech stuff. Has anyone downloaded the 10 update and how do you like it and why is it not offered on my other computer?

I know someone out there will have answers so I thank you ahead of time.

The updates for my 2 computers came at different times....I think it was 3-4 days before the 2nd computer received the notification!!

Got the notification on my Windows 7 Toshiba laptop that the download was done for my laptop, and it was ready for install. I cleaned out all unnecessary software, used ccleaner to clean up all temp files, trash, ran a full scan of Microsft Security Essentials, etc. Ran disk defragmenter, disk cleanup, and updated windows software and continually did windows updates. Had everything my laptop needed. After 4 tries and continual updating, it would not install. It kept stopping at the driver install section, so I updated all drivers, and removed the ones no longer needed. Then I did a clean boot, and it stopped at the configure section of the install. I decided to leave the laptop with Windows 7, and once all the bugs are fixed on Windows 10, I will give away my Vista desktop PC and get one that comes with Windows 10 already installed. The upgrade worked for my sons laptop (he went right to the site and downloaded it, did not use the app), but after 14 total tries on mine, I decided I like Windows 7. It works fantastic for me.

I've read of some installing 10 from a notification that did not come from Microsoft---and they had terrible problems that sent the computer for repair. I received notification to my Win 7 Pro, that I could "register" for the download and go on the list. I made sure it came from MS. So I gave my info and waited to learn when I could upgrade (you know you can only upgrade from 7 or operating systems?)...I think it was only about 24 hrs until I got notice that I was now approved and ready for download. Again I ck'd the sender. After download, I was asked if I wanted to "install now, or wait for a more convenient time". It took several hrs to complete, tho I was only standing by while all this happened. When I was ready to shut down for the night, there was no 'power', no 'shut down', no restart, etc---so I had to force a shutdown with power button on computer. I was distraught and planned to undo the install/go back to Win 7 next morning. However, next morning, there were all the ''turn off'' options, the screen looked different. I then read that all does not work right until after the first update. Now I am pleased as punch with this new windows. I'm keeping it! I've also read that some people mistakenly think it is only a trial version--not so--it is full version and totally free--for a yr from date of release. Some understand that to mean free for a yr and then you have to pay for it. Not so. But if you don't get the free offer before it expires, then you WILL have to buy the software. Like, how often has Microsoft given us anything free??!!!

My best friend is a geek and works at Disneyland with many other geeks and so far NO ONE wants to update to 10. Let them get the bugs out of the software before you try it.

cashs_mom 08-19-2015 01:28 PM

I never update when a new version first comes out. It's sort of like buying the first year of the model change on a car. They never have everything working right. I wait until they work the bugs out and see if people like it. I never did update to Vista because NO ONE I knew liked it and I got along just fine.

I've seen many people/techs say not to install it now but to wait til they get all the bugs out, maybe in about 6 months. I don't know that I want it in any case.....I'm still learning things about 7!

CookyIN 08-19-2015 02:15 PM

I'm happy with 7. I'll "upgrade" to whatever is current and already installed when I buy my next new computer.

tessagin 08-19-2015 02:18 PM

I'm not changing anything til I just have to.

My computer guy said DO NOT DOWNLOAD

sandy l 08-20-2015 03:02 AM

Well, from everything that I have read here from members that have installed it, it sounds like there are more dislikes than there are likes. So I think I'll keep 8.1 until I'm forced into 10, even if it is free.

alleyoop1 08-20-2015 04:01 AM

My son is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer who runs his own computer business and he advised me to wait a few months in case there are bugs in the first release. So when he says it's okay, then I'll upgrade. As Mermaid said, when has Microsoft given us anything for free?!?!

cwcquilters 08-20-2015 05:38 AM

My IT guy said "go for it". He has updated all of the computers where he works and so far so good he says. I have downloaded it and so far it is working just fine. There are a couple of glitches in it, but nothing that is bothersome.
We will each have our own individual problems as we decide to update.

Roberta 08-20-2015 05:43 AM

I want to thank everyone for their replies and I also think I'll wait before downloading it on my main computer. If I get the alert on my second I might download on that since I only use it for watching quilting video's in my studio.

Thanks again everyone.

Well, I updated my Acer notebook last week, and I HATED Windows 10. After using it for several days and having multiple issues, I went back to Windows 8.1. I will not upgrade my desk computer -- it runs just find on Windows 7! I hope y'all have better luck than I did, but I will not be installing Windows 10 again. Betty

Clarice29 08-20-2015 07:24 AM

My son said not to do it. It just leads to trouble. He works with computers a lot and I believe him.

I don't know what to think about all this. My gut is that Microsoft shotgun this out, and there's way too many scenarios out there to have them all work out perfectly. Kind of a lab test. Some fails, some successes.

I went ahead and downloaded/installed Win10 last week. My most used programs such as ProQ Designer, Quicken, EQ7 work fine. When I went to view one of my videos though I had issues. Also I use YDT Video Downloader and now I'm having issues with it. When I went to print a page in ProQ it said there was an error and couldn't print the page but it did anyway. My internet (Google, Yahoo and AOL) I have no issues with so far. I think I opened up Embird too but can't remember so won't say one way or the other how it works. Haven't downloaded/installed on my laptop yet.

purplefiend 08-20-2015 11:11 AM

I'm not upgrading my laptop to Windows 10. I'm afraid that EQ6 won't work any more. The laptop has Windows 7 as the operating system.

My granddaughter is going to college and taking computer software courses, she came into town this past weekend and upgraded my computer to Windows 10 and I love it...still very simple to use, kept all the files and things I had...her and her hubby both are computer geeks, and they both have Windows 10 and they have had no problems either...Microsoft took Windows 7 and 8 and combined and got Windows 10....everything is still good after a week...so I am happy..

ArchaicArcane 08-20-2015 01:04 PM

I'm a tech as well and I have told many of my business clients not to do it until I let them know it's stable. I won't install it on my machines yet - Microsoft isn't paying me to beta test their software so I won't.

Besides, my formerly "throw away machine" (Win8.1 was only meant for surfing and other unimportant stuff) in my studio now has embroidery software on it that's supposedly not supported past Windows XP. I just know that's going to go sideways if I upgrade the machine.

matraina 08-20-2015 05:10 PM

I downloaded it but I'm not sure I did it correctly. It's just as slow as ever now. When I try to click on my printer on the home screen to see which ink needs to be replaced, I get a message that needed a yes or no answer. I tried "yes" and got the same message so I tried "no" and still got nothing. Haven't had time to call the store yet.

kona 08-20-2015 05:27 PM

I have no problems and it runs just fine, hardly see a difference.
