A word to the wise

I have not really done much business over the internet. I pretty much am more of a customer than a merchant, and I have very little experience with being a merchant on the internet. My oldest daughter does steady swaps and trades on a different type of forum, and she told me something important. If you decide to sell something on the internet, make sure that you get the payment first. Even if someone seems very nice, it is better to be cautious.

For those of you who have experience, it may be common knowledge, but not to someone like me. I think that I may have been too trusting. I hope that I am wrong. Please look out for yourself better than I did.

Hope your loss was not too bad. Thanks for the warning, it always bears repeating.

Pay-Pall is huge for online transactions. Don't know how we could do any of this without it.

I don't know why anyone would ship a product without getting payment, or at least getting a hold on funds to make that payment, before shipping.

After all, when you go into a store to buy fabric, groceries, or anything else, the merchant doesn't give you the stuff then tell you to pay when you get around to it...

chips88 08-10-2012 04:09 PM

it could go either way . when you buy something from anyone from here or ebay. you expect to get what ya pay for. so its hard for buyers as well as sellers.and some do not have paypal and the only way they can pay is cash or money order.

I am not 100 percent that I have a loss. I am hoping that I don't. It was just a good conversation to have with my daughter. Sometimes moms learn from their kids and vice versa.

My fingers are crossed for you! I hope it works out for you...just don't ship again without payment first!!!

I'm a softy too and because my son knows this he is always ready to put things online for me and if I see something he'll do the dickerin-n-dealing .As to this PayPal stuff I have no clue how it works and with all the new stuff he's been teaching me about computers I choose to learn only so much at a time. But I think I'll continue to let him do the online buying and selling for me.

Definitely need to get payment before shipment. I do deals on the internet, but always get payment before shipping.

tdgiffin 08-11-2012 03:56 PM

Yes, and still no payment or return email as of today...I keep hoping.

and it happens the other way too .... but most people are honest and trustworthy and I'd like to believe that most people can be trusted.

Yeah I got stuck when I sold a bunch of books. One didn't have paypal so I said I would accept a check . Shipped the book out with all the others and never got the check. And she stopped answering my emails. soo live and learn.

I recently gifted a sewing machine to a single mom who never answered my emails after she picked up the machine. Never even got a TY note from her. One of them had important info about the machine and its operation but nothing back from her. Live and learn. Hopefully, if she kept the machine, she figured out how to operate it properly.

Perhaps her parents never taught her the basics of good manners and she doesn't realize that she appears to be thoughtless, or downright rude.

Perhaps, but she was not a young single mom but an older single mom. I was amazed not hear back from her but perhaps you are right. All I know is that I did the right thng by offering her a machine for patching her kids' jeans.
