I have an almost 3 year old Chihuahua(my avatar picture).
I had her fixed for a couple of reasons. One, because I was not going to breed her, she was too small and I was inexperienced. Two, so that we didn't have to deal with the monthlys. And three, to keep her calm. She is the best little girl. She was crate trained and potty trained by the breeder. We only put her in the crate at night, with her potty box. She was so tiny and winters around here are very cold, having the potty box was great. We used shredded paper, the same as what the breeder did. It wasn't until my cat passed away that we stopped putting her in the crate at night. She now sleeps with us in her own little blanket. |
I'm for spaying and neutering all pets. They are healthier in the long run - no fights over nookie, and more prone to bond with their humans. Don't count on it to slow him down though.

You've heard the old saying, "If it has testicles or tires, it's gonna cause trouble"!

If he is crated a good bit of time he is acting out cause he is bored and he needs exercise. Take him for a good long walk every day after getting out of the crate and see how quickly you both benefit from it. All dogs need exercise like people some more then others.

:-( Our dog, cat, and colt are fixed and we keep the mares away from stallions. |
Please have him fixed...Tinkerbelle, a chihuahua, is going to be 4 years old this week and she really doesn't have behavior issues...She rarely barks, only if you ring the doorbell or if one rings on TV that sounds like ours...or if you are the UPS man.(she knows that he is afraid of her and she puts on a great show, barking, snarling.)
My son also has a chihuahua, but he waited till he was about 1 1/2 to fix him...bad behavior was already learned... |

And I think your pup is still young enough for the op to have a positive effect on his behaviour - I was once told by a vet that past two is too old and the bad habits are ingrained and can only be trained out. Of course, fixing doesn't replace training - still needs a firm hand by the sounds of him! Cute pup though!
