Yet another phone spam wrinkle

At least it's new to me! I got a call today that showed on the caller i.d. as MY name and MY phone number...apparently I was calling myself! Caught it in time and didn't answer it. Needles to say they didn't leave a msg. Called my phone provider and they said the telemarketers can use a filter and make the i.d. show your own name and number instead of e.g. "caller unknown" etc. I might be tempted to answer one of these just to see who it is and harrass them a bit.:(

mandyrose 08-28-2014 02:49 PM

ugh! was this your home phone? I finally got rid of my home phone I was paying $20.00 a month to have it just sitting there and none of the phone calls were for me I get calls from collectors looking for my ex and we divorce 18 yrs ago and collectors looking for a family member that I haven't seen since we were kids we have same last names.so far they haven't got to my cell yet, but I do get calls on my cell saying I won a trip stuff like that I don't answer them.

nativetexan 08-28-2014 05:34 PM

I have gotten that too. Now i get the number with the last two digits different every few days. Over and over. I do report them but some don't give up.

mary quilting 08-28-2014 06:24 PM

Talk to your provider. I think that they can block numbers for you.

sept97 08-29-2014 03:46 AM

I answered it when it showed my own number and I asked why are you spoofing my name & number...they said it's the company we work for and I told them to talk to them and to knock it off then I hung up on them

ManiacQuilter2 08-29-2014 04:25 AM

GO for IT and have fun. I don't have caller ID, wish I did. Someone tried to sell me a vacation package when I hardly leave my apt being disable. I hung up after he didn't listen to my THIRD "NO Thank You"!!

Snooze2978 08-29-2014 07:14 AM

Got the same thing but they mispelled my name so knew it to be a telemarketer. Get a call most everyday so just let the voice mail take over. Only problem is they continue to call back whether I answer it or not as they're trying to determine when someone is home. I just write down the phone # (including my own) and add it to "blocked #'s". Problem with that is I have only so many I can block before I run out of spots. Most calls are recordings so you don't even get a real person on the other end to tell them not to call you.

shasta5718 08-29-2014 07:21 AM

It's not just phones that you get your name used, I had a bug spray guy come around and tell me he was helping me from just down the street and he had a special deal. I told him I had used Moxie before and they were not my choice and wanted to know when I moved down the street.

quilter68 08-29-2014 07:36 AM

Some of these calls are from overseas and the speaker can use several languages. So....I make up my own language - Oie, suse. someesha? and so forth. This is a language that none of them speak and they just hang-up. They don't call back!

Kitsie 08-29-2014 07:38 AM

I get calls from "withheld" as the caller. Do they REALLY think I'm going to answer??

bearisgray 08-29-2014 08:26 AM

Got onetoo with our name and number on the caller id.

DonnaC 08-29-2014 09:09 AM

Oh yes, aren't those just so much fun? I get them all the time. I never answer anybody I don't know... thank goodness for caller ID.

MargeD 08-29-2014 09:47 AM

I haven't had that happen, but since we moved to our apt. nearly 5 years ago we periodically will get calls for someone we do not know. You'd think they would give up by now, but they don't. We generally let the answering machine pick up unless I recognize the number, like my Dr.'s office. We keep a land line phone because our son pays for both of our cell phones, so we don't want to abuse the privilege. I love your cat, reminds me of my Casper, but he had lighter grey, almost like horns on his forehead, when I lost him I went from having a white cat to an all black cat, but they were and are a definite stress reliever. Cute kitty.

institches33 08-29-2014 10:02 AM

I answered and there was no one there.

Actually, there is an app for that if you have a smartphone. My DH told me, but I don't know what the name is.

That's because it's a robocall. The best way to handle those is not to say anything and the "robot" will hang up, or you hang up.

Stitchit123 08-29-2014 10:30 AM

Have you noticed that these annoying calls seem to come in waves. For a couple months it will be car ins. then health ins. etc.. Now there's calls for home improvement -I bought a gallon of mistint paint at Lowe's and the calls started. Before that the brake lines on my car were all replaced and calls from outfits for care care ins? started. If my phone rings10 times a day 9 of them are from people trying to sell something. I love caller ID all I do now is look at the ID when its an 800# I click the phone on then off. I hate hearing a phone ring. In the time it's taken me to type this I've had 7 calls from the same # ID says auto ins. When my ins.co. calls their name is displayed.

I've gotten pesty emails where they change part of the addy but it is for the same thing and I block them. We have some numbers blocked on our phone and we are on the no caller list but scam artists don't care about that.

tessagin 08-29-2014 10:38 AM

I got a call this a.m. It was a boy and he said, "Hi, Grandma. This is your grandson. I knew he was too old to be my grandson. I said, "Is this Ty?" He said, "Yes, Grandma, this is Ty. Did you hear about the trip? I said no. He said I won a trip to Las Vegas. I'm there now. I knew the next thing out of his mouth was going to be, "I need money." I said, "You're full of baloney and I don't want to listen to you anymore" and hung up.

Sewnoma 08-29-2014 12:21 PM

DH & I got rid of our land line for a couple years, but sometimes he'd be trying to call me when I was home but I wouldn't hear my cell phone because it'd be downstairs in my purse.

So we re-installed a land line but we didn't give the number out to anybody. He and I are the only ones that should ever be calling on that line. Eventually, of course, the spammers and telemarketers found the number.

But since I know it's either spam, a wrong number, or rarely it's DH, when it rings I have fun with it.

My favorite is to just pick it up and say, "Passphrase, please". They'll pause, start to talk, and I will just say, "That is not the current passphrase" and hang up.

Or sometimes I'll act like I think they're someone who I'm arguing with calling back and start making up crazy stuff. "LOOK MARSHA, I told you I don't CARE what your excuse is. There is no way I am going to forgive you for shaving my dog and painting it blue!!!"

MFord 08-29-2014 12:27 PM

I got rid of my land line about 4 years ago because we all had cell phones, so there was no need. What a blessed relief! But now, somehow, they are getting hold of cell phone numbers. I just don't answer. Problem is, one of my doctors doesn't show his number - comes up as "Unknown", so I don't answer those calls either. That's a nuisance when it's the nurse calling, because it's tough to get back to them before they're off doing something else.

solstice3 08-29-2014 05:40 PM

It seems to be getting worse instead of better and I am on the do not call registry

ILoveToQuilt 08-29-2014 05:52 PM

The calls I absolutely love are the ones that sound like an answering machine and tell you they are too busy to take your call at this time and to please call back later! Hey, they called me!

Love the ideas of "fake" languages and the "arguing". Going to have to try these!

Can't wait for elections to be over. Get dozens of calls now for candidates I've never even heard of, let alone will vote for! Yes, I do have caller ID and an answering machine, but the political calls fill up the machine. Oh well...

As Ernestine (remember her???) used to say: "One ringy dingy. Two ringy dingy...(snort, snort)". LOL

Caswews 08-29-2014 07:16 PM

Is your number listed with donotcall.gov ?? I have both my home phone and our cell phones listed.

nstitches4u 08-30-2014 09:17 AM

That happened to me last week. I usually check caller ID before I answer, but I was distracted and picked it up without thinking. When I said hello, nobody said anything. I looked at caller ID and saw our number and my cat's name. We have our phone listed under Andy and our last name so when salesmen call I just tell them that Andy is in the litter box and can't come to the phone right now and they hang up on me. lol I called the phone company and they disconnected our line and reset our digital profile (whatever that means) and reconnected it. They said that should take care of the problem.

Our phone and our cell phones are on the federal and state Do Not Call lists. It doesn't seem to make any difference. We still get lots of sales calls.

Carol34446 08-30-2014 09:18 AM

I get calls for my ex's present wife from collections agencies. We have been divorced 21 years. I tell them it is my ex's wife, she lives in TX and I live in FL and to take my number off her name. Son tells me she spends faster than he can make it---his problem. Sales calls if it is a machine I hang up and if a person I tell them I am broke and have no money to buy anything so loose my number. Right now worst is political ads, most I ignore.

That's funny! A friend of mine got a call saying she would get a free cruise if she had their company put siding on her house. She said, "Oh! That's wonderful! My husband has cancer and I just found out that I have cancer. We can't work and haven't been able to pay our bills for months. We really need a vacation! Thank you!" The caller hung up on her. None of what she told them was true, but they suddenly didn't want to "give" her a cruise. lol

RuthiesRetreat3 08-30-2014 09:36 AM

Oh gosh. I just finished reading this one minute ago and the phone rang. It was a guy, very think accent, asking about the Microsoft on my computer. I said "what computer?" He said "the Microsoft operating system". I said "what system if I don't have a computer?" He hung up on me.

mjhaess 08-30-2014 09:58 AM

I blocked the telemarketers years ago with that 888 number. I have yet to bothered by them. I don't remember the number but it was sent to me by a friend and it worked great..
