when I was in junior high, we saw a filmstrip (remember those?) about accents in NYC. Depending on your accent, they could tell your neighborhood. Like tirty tree for "33"?(a Brooklyn nabe) or berl in erl for "boil in oil" (Green Point or green pernt if that's where you lived.). Nowadays, neighborhoods are so changed that these accents are lost. Of course, because I live in Manhattan (not the Bronx, Queens, or Brooklyn), I do not have an accent (LOL)

Everyone has an accent! I have heard people in Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio etc. all say they do not have an accent......but of course they do - they just think everyone else sounds funny! :) I had a professor in college who taught linguistics who would have you read a certain paragraph and could pinpoint not only the state, but what part of it you were from. If you tried to fool him he knew. I have heard at least a hundred different accents in my state alone. By the way, this test and several others I have taken says I speak with a middle Canadian accent. I am from Southern Illinois.

Said I was from the west. Missed mine a long ways. I'm from the north east

MIDLAND I'm from West, by gosh, Virginia but we northern panhandlers tend to speak Pittsburghese. "My car tire caught fire" would sound like: "My car tar cot far.":D

Thanks for the fun, Ditter.

Mine said inland north wherever that is I am thinking the great lakes.nope I was born in japan moved all over the world when young now in southern indiana. WhenI lived in california every one asked me if I was from the south.

Mine said Inland North. Would think "by the shores of Gitche Gumee" qualifies. Funny, my relatives in Chicago think I sound Canadian. There was no category for Ranger. Oh wait, there is. It's lumped with the accent from NW MN. No way.
