There has been a super thread on what foods got us into trouble as kids...how about some good foods, or food memories?

One of my favourites...my mom had gone "home" for a visit 91500 miles away), so Dad was making a cake for my brother's birthday. When he was making the icing, first it was too thin, so he added more icing sugar, then it was too thick, so he added more milk. By the time he got it the right consistency to spread, there was WAAAAAAY too much for the cake. We, my siblings and I, all convinced him that he should put ALL the icing on the cake. The icing ended up being as thick as the cake!!! LOL Best cake we ever had.

What's your story?

Patti

We were on a trip one summer when my brother and I were young. We stopped in a diner for breakfast. My brother got pancakes. They put the butter on the plate with and ice cream scoop, so DB put the whole scoop of butter in his mouth. He tried to spit it out, but you know, it was butter! It went everywhere- family legend... I think he was 4-5 yrs. old... And DM's burgers were legendary, she always burned them. She is a very good cook now- in her 80's!!!

A.W.Shucks in Charleston, SC. best seafood I ever had! Even my DH loved the place and he's deadly allergic to seafood. A manager specially prepared him a Pasta Premavera that he still talks about.

Anything and everything my Mom cooks.Even when she comes for a visit, she cooks all my favorites. My Dad offered to take us out to dinner one night but my DH said he would rather have moms cooking. That's what he got!!

My dad used to make me "egg in a hole" when I was little. I make it for myself sometimes, but it never tastes quite the same as his lol. My grandmother used to make grape pie, I have never seen or tasted it anywhere else...it was yummy.

We loved it when my Mom would put food coloring in the pancake batter. It seems that green always tasted best!

My Dad and I loved corned beef hash with a poached egg on top of it. Love, love, loved it. We were the only ones in the family that would eat it. Also, my Mom's homemade bread pudding with lemon sauce. Yum, Yum!!

When my DH and I were traveling back to Maine from Texas in the early 60's....we were young, believe me, we stopped in a diner. He ordered a burger, well done. Being from TX, he knew his beef....he took one bite, it bled, he put it down and announced to the whole diner by the highway....If I had some salve and a bandaid, I could save this critter. I tried to melt to the floor.

We lived on a farm and when it was time to slaughter the hogs (yes a family affair), it was an early morning until late night deal to get everything wrapped and put in the freezer. No matter what time we stopped though, my dad would fry some tenderloin and eggs so mom wouldn't have to worry about getting up to fix some breakfast. The next day we all slept in (until about 9)! One of many, many wonderful memories of what I know now was an idyliic childhood but at the time thought was boring! Wish I could turn back the clock and enjoy it more!

In 1965 our family was taking a road trip from Seattle to Kansas. One night we stopped for dinner and I ordered a meal that was supposed to come with onion rings. (I was 11 years old at the time.) As it turned out, the place was out of onion rings and I was very upset. To try and make me happy my dad said I could order them for breakfast. So when we stopped for breakfast the next morning, we stopped at a truck stop somewhere in Wyoming, and I ordered onion rings and pancakes. The waitress looked at my dad and said, "It's okay, just give her what she wants."

Almost every time the subject of having weird food for breakfast my mom, dad and sisters bring up that time.

By the way, they were wonderful!

The most wonderful thing I remember is my Mama making banana pudding (especially if the bananas were almost too ripe). She did that cooking thing with some of this and some of that. We asked her time and again to write down her recipe and finally my younger sister got it written down. But no matter how hard we try, we cannot duplicate that banana pudding. She also cooked it in the same pot everytime so that might have something to do with it. Oh boy, I loved it served warm and we always requested it at least once a week!!

I had the butter/ice cream thing happen to me too. Not fun, especially when everyone is sitting there laughing at you, except momma who was yelling at daddy.
I seemed to have a problem with crab imperial. One restaurant, the longer I ate the hotter it got. Daddy finally tasted it and it had cayenne pepper on top instead of paprika. Got a new one. Another restaurant left it in the oven too long and had to make a new one.
I think the best was my momma's chicken pies. She made them in the pie pan with all the vegies. We found one in the freezer after she died. Who got it? No one could eat it for a while. My SIL makes them for me now since I'm the only one who eats them.
My grandmom made wonderful applesauce cookies she adapted from an applesauce cake recipe.
I remember coming home from school and find momma at the kitchen table patting up brains to fry. Yuk! Didn't have to eat that or cabbage or stewed tomatoes.

I lovvvve watermelon!! and once took the whole thing and hid in the back of my Dads flat bed truck, Ate it All!!! I was about 7yrs. Boy was it Good!LOL

ShowMama 09-23-2011 06:25 AM

My mother's chicken and dressing was the best in the world. When we'd have family get-togethers, my cousins would often ask her to bring that. I make mine like hers, but have only been able to get it to taste like hers a couple of times.

I also loved my great-aunt's homemade-from-scratch lemon meringue pie, and another aunt made yummy homemade caramel pies.

Wahhhhh! Now I'm feeling nostalgic and wish we could go back to those good old days for those wonderful foods!

mhansen6 09-23-2011 06:30 AM

Graham crackers with frosting. Whenever my mother made a cake she took the left over frosting and put it between two graham crackers. My sister and I loved the crackers better than the cake.

I fondly remember a meal we had on the first vacation my family took to the Smokey Mountains. There were 6 of us kids.... we were not rich by any means... but Mom and Dad always took the time to make sure we had fun as a family.

We stayed at the "River Breeze" motel in Pigeon Forge (it is still there!). The ONLY other thing in Pigeon Forge at that time was 'Hillbilly Village' right across the road. --- also still there!

One morning, my dad cooked breakfast at the picnic area behind the motel on the river bank. I remember him washing the skillet in the river!! ;-) Precious, precious times.

My Mother made the best pinto beans with ham you ever tasted. Beans were cheap to buy and the ham was given to us by a neighbor. I always remember her homemade biscuits to go along with it. I've never been able to make my beans taste like hers and I can't make biscuits to save my soul. These were hard times but I remember them vividly. Those days cannot be recaptured but remain in my memory.

Once in a while, my mom used to make pancakes for all 6 of us before school. She had a electric griddle and had to make lots of pancakes in a short time. I didn't know for the longest time - that pancakes are not supposed to be gooey in the middle.

Whenever Dad was responsible for dinner - we got SOS or scrambled eggs and ham.

athomenow 09-23-2011 07:07 AM

Just about anything mom cooked especially fried chicken. We lived on a farm also and it was a wonderful childhood, no money but never felt deprived. We grew all our food and the table was always loaded with wonderful things to eat. I remember when we would butcher the beef and dad would fix some beef tenderloin about midnight and it was so good.

My mom would make us Chocolate Gravy - every once in a while for breakfast - it was so good over buscuits - the leftovers she would add rice to it - so it was like rice chocolate pudding. Also, when we had snow - my mom would make snow ice cream - that was a great treat.

Diannia 09-23-2011 08:52 AM

Otis-try the choc gravy on pancakes...to die for! My dad's family did them.

My stepbrother's grandmother made the best german choc cake from scratch...and I loved her fried ham. She was a wonderful cook.

My mom's fried chicken and potato salad were very yummy.

My fav food my grandma made was her spaghetti and homemade sauce.

I have 2 funny memories of cooking disasters I did. The first one was my first attempt as a child to make cookies. I used salt instead of sugar. One of my parent's friends ate one and bless his heart he somehow finished it and said it was good...my 2nd memory was when I was PG w/my 1st son. I saw this recipe on a potato chip bag for a tuna casserole using the chips (sour cream and onion). I thought it sounded good (a PG thing I'm sure) and made it...let's just say my DH and DB didn't agree with my opinion of it and leave it at that...

My mother did this too! No one else has ever heard of this. They say no grahams are too sweet for that, they need peanutbutter. Don't knock it until you try it. MMMM!

when i was about six yrs old our dog bit me on the lower lip and i had to have stitches. i was fed chicken noodle soup (broth only) through a straw. even today that is my favorite soup!!

Kimkankwilt 09-23-2011 01:40 PM

Me and my Grandpa would get a real big watermelon, cut it in half, and then eat the whole thing on his porch...being VERY mindful not to get the seeds in his dichondra.

Greenheron 09-23-2011 02:51 PM

My mother (many, many great meals) made huge pots of vegetable soup. She started after breakfast with the meat--she used beef plate boil--and added ingredients according to their cooking time. My father would walk home for lunch from the railroad yard. Mom would fish out the hunk of plate, now tender and seasoned by the soup ingredients. Dad would fork out pieces of beef from the fat, bones and gristle and wrap in a slice of buttered bread. A little salt and pepper made a sandwich like ambrosia--some horseradish made it heavenly ambrosia.

Sound gross? Maybe but oh, so delicious.

I made these for the kids at nature camp for after campfire snack. They were their very favorite and they requested an encore.
 If you really want to 'take it up a notch' use homemade cream cheese icing.

My Mum used to make home made donuts as a special treat when we were kids. They were the "cake" kind, not the yeast raised kind. She would deep fry them in a pot on the stove and roll them in cinnamon and sugar. We would eat some while they were still warm. Yummy!! We also would make something called "Crackle" in the wintertime. It had maple syrup in it and Mum would cook it on the stove and then throw it on the snow outside. It would harden and "crackle" when you ate it. Delicious!! This is making me very nostalgic - I still miss my Mum...

She never made cream cheese frosting. She always told me I wouldn't like cream cheese, apparently because she didn't like it. I love it so I never told my kids they wouldn't like something. Told them they had to try everything. What if I told you that you wouldn't like pizza? Guess she didn't like broccoli either.
