Default Removing knife marks from dishes

Does anyone know how to remove the sort of silvery-black marks that knives seem to make on plates from cutting? I used to have white Pfalzgraf plates that got really bad and even the recommended cleaner didn't remove the marks. Now I have Fiestaware (so cheerful!) and the same thing is happening. Does anyone have a suggestion - other than banning knives!

Are you sure it is knives that is causing the marks??
I was told the marks on my dishes and bowls are made in the dishwasher!

I use baking soda to scrub the marks out. Least harmful to any surface IMHO.
