Can someone tell me what the difference is between these two? Even though I've been a member for awhile, I've only just started "chatting". So I'm not up on all the user stuff yet.

The "Quote Reply" will include the previous comments as is shown in this example.

The "Reply" button will not include the previous comments and will just show what you write in your message.

Glad that you're starting to reply to the topic messages. Did you know that there is a "Live Chat" area that is done in real time? Check it out at the link at the top of the page.

Hope this helps to explain the difference.
