Default Separating Zipper?

I am confused about this kind of zipper. Is it suppose to separate on both ends like a jacket. I am making a purse and it is calling for one of these 12 inches long. please tell me if this is what they mean?

Yes, a separating zipper separates on both ends like on a jacket. Many tote bag patterns call for separating zippers, especially if they are on the top of the bag so you can fully open up the bag from end to end.

Thank you Jeanne! I post the purse and I use magnet closures.

I would think you could use either the zipper or the magnetic closure. It is whatever you feel safer using.

Putting a separating zipper on a bag so it opens at both ends sounds like a good idea to avoid strain at the closed end.

I've seen bags that have a zipper that extends about 5" or so past the opening of the bag. I always wondered why. Now after reading your post I think that may be why...so it opens more. And since I have a bag to make for my daughter I was thinking about doing this with the zipper.

Some tote patterns call for a separating zipper even though you sew the separating end closed after inserting because it makes the construction easier.
