I went to a quilt fabric sale while back put on by group of quilters in Fountain Valley, CA it was outdoors and we had rain believe it or not so the ladies decided to sell fabric by the piece instead of cutting and that when I bought about 2 yds of black but didn't wash it until this week with other dark prints. It wasn't until I took them out of the dryer that I saw the black all shredded to my horror and it left some thing on the other fabrics I had included in the wash. I tried removing the black what ever with masking tape the best I could and it took for ever. I have never experienced fabric shredding like that before. Do you think it was old? It felt sturdy I just never even gave it a thought. Definitely very week after going thru the machine.

Sounds like it was really old to me. Sorry you had to go thru that. What a mess and waste of money :(

The only thing I can think of was that it had to have been really old. I am surprised that it did not shred in the wash.Too bad.

I had some cheap stuff do that to me. That is why I always prewash because I hadn't and used it for a back of a quilt and it shredded.

Sounds to me like it may actually have been a fiberglass fabric that looked like cotton. I had this experience many years ago and those little fibers are actually bits of fiberglass. I remember that even the next few loads of wash had some in it. If the clothes are worn, they will be quite itchy against the skin. Another problem can be that some small fibers can become airborne and be inadvertently breathed in. That is why they have special people now to remove old fiberglass insulation and wear protective clothing, breathing aparatus and have a contained removal system.

Gosh I sure hope it wasn't fiberglass. It just felt like Kona fabric.
