We live near a major university, and we see strange items along the road all the time. Usually stuff that the home-bound kids did not secure well enough on their load home! Lone shoes, misc. cushions, various bins of ??, pillows, blankets, clothes, towels, coolers, pieces of furniture or parts thereof, etc.

How do you lose just ONE?
My husband many years ago, left his shoes on top of the car and drove off. When he got to his destination, one shoe was stuck on the back bumper, the other long gone. Of course that was when the back bumpers were still chrome.

I always thought the same thing. But now maybe someone was dangling a foot out a window and the shoe dropped off?

This was the saddest:

Denver street sweeping crews report that they find more single shoes in areas where there are more homeless people. In some neighborhoods, people leave boxes of clothes and shoes in the alley for homeless people who rummage through the alleys. They say a homeless person might be more likely to toss out one worn shoe, but keep the other half of the pair if the shoe is not worn out.

The vibrator story reminded me of the time when I went garage-saleing (sp?) with my mother-in-law, who is quite a live wire and rabble-rouser. We stopped at a large multi-family garage sale; I was at the front looking at books, she was in the back digging through boxes. All of a sudden I heard her yell very loudly "HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT FOR THE DILDO?" I turned and looked, and sure enough, she was holding it way up in the air, where EVERYONE could see it. The poor homeowner turned beet red, quickly scampered over, said "Oh my god, how did THAT get in there?", took it from my MIL, and ran inside the house. My MIL had a case of the giggles for about a week.

Default "The Night of the Flying Monkeys"

LOL! You must have been laughing about those beach balls. The graduation theory makes a lot of sense.

We had an experience one time on the NYS thruway which we always call "The Night of the Flying Monkeys". It was dark and pouring down rain. I was driving with the windshield wipers on full speed and my DH was in the passenger seat. All of a sudden A Monkey pressed his face against the windshield and then was gone. We both screamed. And then it happened again. That time we realized it was a stuffed toy. We kept hitting monkeys and we coud see in the headlights that there were monkeys bouncing all along the highway. A few miles further down the road a truck was pulled over with an open back end and large and empty ripped up open box... no more monkeys jumpin on the road bed after that!

What a "Hip Hip Hooray!" that would be Lori!

Peckish your MIL sounds like she keeps you on your toes! My grandmother was like that. We were on a road trip with her to Atlanta once, on back mountain roads and my sister and could not figure out why this carload of old guys kept passing us, then slowing down and ogling us. That went on for miles and miles. It was Grandma of course - we finally caught her in the act. She was in the back seat vamping and making eyes at them every time they slowed down. Lord how I miss her!

I've had a few strange things show up in my yard too! Many years ago, I was hanging laundry out on the line, when something landed on my head. It was obviously a bird, but I couldn't imagine why it landed on my head. Very gradually I put my fingers up there and the prettiest little parakeet climbed right onto them.

Another time, when I was also in the back yard, it was a gorgeous sunny day with no wind or storms. Saw some movement upwards, looked up and a large patio umbrella was floating down into my yard. Finally located the owner a couple of yards away. Never could figure out why it was picked up in the first place though. Kept looking for Mary Poppins!!!

The strangest thing we have seen on the side of the road was a boat, yes, a boat. No trailer, just a large boat (maybe 25 feet long) in the median of Route 2 in northern Ohio, about 5 - 10 miles south of lake Erie. Could not figure out how it jumped off the trailer and onto the median of the road. This was about 5 or 6 years ago and we still talk about it every time we go past there, 2 - 3 times a year.
