I'm not seeing a level of skill or service worth tipping for.

Susie, don't you love the Brazilian Blowout? It makes my hair so soft and no more frizz! I'm having mine redone at my August appointment.
Patrice S- YES! My kids no longer call me Oprah It's so much easier to manage these days, loving it!

How about your plumber, electrician, mechanic, or carpenter? Do you tip any of them?

What about if she is always late even if you are the first appointment and the owner.

In that case, I'd be looking for a new hairdresser.

I usually tip about 25% or a bit more. My hairdresser charges between $55 and $65 for a haircut and I normally give him $15. I also tip the shampoo girl $5. I have very short hair so my haircuts happen about every 5 weeks.

I do NOT tip or give gifts at Christmas.

No, I don't. But they don't provide me with a personal service either. And they are extremely well paid

Minimum of 20%. It's easier to find a new doctor than a good hairdresser.

when I closed my shop it took about a week to miss doing hair.
I still miss my customers, 10 years later.

They have to deal with all kinds of people and all kinds of hair.
Remember, they make you feel good and look good.
20% to me is appropriate. You will give a waitress 20%, why not the person who's been working on you for 2-3 hrs.
From a former hairdresser, my biggest expense was the "magic wand" payments for all those unrealistic new clients....lol. I definitely tip at least 20%.
