Ditter has a great point!

"Twitter shame" put me in mind of the stocks in early Jamestowne VA where a person could be shackled for a day or more and shamed and ridiculed by the public for their transgressions.
With the state of things these days, I sort of wish we could go back to that, don't you? There is SO little self-responsibility now.

This happened in SC - they used to have video poker parlors. A woman left her baby (VERY young) in the car while she played for hours, baby died. SC repealed all gambling places, partly because of this case.
People get STUPID in casinos. (not everyone....)

In TX it's the law, you can not leave an unattended child even in a running car for the 30 seconds it *might* take to run into, say, the Quik Mart, the Post Office, the bank, whatever.
It's not uncommon for temps in a closed vehicle in TX summer heat to reach upwards of 130-140 degrees! I used to keep a metal bar under my driver's seat when I was in real estate just for the purpose of breaking out a car window if the need arose. Never did, thankfully, but I'd have used it on a pet/child-in-car situation in a heartbeat!

DS had changed spark plugs in my car and left the mess for me to clean up. I was recycling the plugs when my DS said NO leave 1 in the car. He has worked as a car repo man and says you can use the round tip to shatter a window if you have to I have electric windows so I put it under the drivers seat. I do construction repairs and keep a claw hammer in the trunk. Would not hesitate to use either if I saw a child or animal locked in a vehicle.

Here in Bakersfield it get over 100 deg in the summer for several days at a time. Everyone here watches for kids and dogs in closed cars, and it hits the news every few days...stupid people leaving kids and dogs to DIE in hot cars. It is a jail offense here, and kids have been taken away from parents for it. We almost broke out a window a couple of weeks ago, but while we were looking around, the owner came out, and looked shamefaced when he noticed we were standing there waiting. The window was down a little, but the dog was still overheated.

Yeah I wasn't concerned about twitter I was concerned about the dog. I did break someones window once to save a dog and
got in no trouble by police. Stupid people.

I'm confused. Sorry. I'm not understanding what you wrote that you saw the dog in distress yet continued to your car while watching another passerby show concern to handle the situation yet doubling back in your car to make sure authorities were on the way?

Let's face it, we're all different and that's a wonderful thing. I fully embrace it. I've been so fortunate in my life so far that I have never come across such cruelty. I really love the show "What Would You Do" and this very scenario was secretly taped. I was appalled that a group of firefighters ignored the ultimate safety of the dog locked inside. This was a controlled experiment as the car was outfitted with a small a/c unit and the dog handler was hidden on the floor of the car so she could direct the dog to bark also to get attention. But, should I ever find myself seeing anything like that my instinct would be to get to the nearest phone, I don't have a cell, call the proper authorities, get some water, break the window and help the animal. If someone else were on the scene, I still wouldn't leave until I knew the animal was taken care of properly and safe. I don't even want to think how upset I'd be to find a child left like that. The show did that too.

Where I live there's cases of kids left in the cars all the time only to die from the extreme heat. It's heartbreaking.

Twitter shame is the least the owner may face. I hope he/she was cited and has a court date. If the owner is willing to treat their pet that way, what must they do in the relative privacy of their own home. Yikes!!!
