Looking for Help & Ideas on Knitting Collars
I am finishing up a knitted capelette I'm making for my sister. She's a sculptor and wants something to wear in her studio in the winter. I designed it to be open in the front, and it extends to just above her elbows, leaving her forearms and hands free to work in the clay.
I knitted it from the base up to the neck. I bound off the neck and picked up stitches to start a collar. I'm imagining a standard "point" collar. Here's my problem / questions:
Is it better to knit a collar separately and then graft it in afterwards?
Should I put in some increases so the collar points are facing more towards the front?
I read somewhere that it's a good idea to add some short rows in the back so the collar raises up a bit in the back. Agree?
Thanks for any help!

Your plan sounds lovely. As for knitting on or grafting a separate collar, neither one is really "better". Its your preference, really. I've done both ways and there's no noticable difference in the end result.
Agree with a few short rows to help the collar have the "roll" it's supposed to have at the back.
Without seeing the pattern/design, I don't how to answer your increases question.
Your questions are good and this is the right place to post them, in "Chit Chat (non-quilting talk)". Many of us quilters here on the Board are also avid knitters and crocheters.

It is so nice to hear from you! I have had knitting questions answered expertly here in the past, so I was confident someone here would have good ideas. I am forging forward with my project - its not something I would enter at the fair, but, as my sister says, "It is homemade, every stitch is full of love, and that makes it special!"
If I were to publish my pattern, I would definitely change some aspects about it. I continued the yoke's pattern (seed stitch) up into the collar, which, in retrospect, might drape better in Stockinette. But I don't want to go back and do it over, so it is what it is.
Thank you for your response!

I was wondering if you had come up with a solution yet.
Also wondered if you have a preference when it comes to grafting or knitting right up into your collar.
I looked up some ideas, but decided you were probably already well into finishing .
I found lots and lots of different collars that could be added - each one offering different solutions for adding them.
You might enjoy watching some of these, although only a few are capelets with an opening in the front

looking forward to your pic

Thank you! I'll check them out -- maybe one of them will be enticing enough to convince me to rip out the 15-or-so rows I have into the collar right now! I've had to rip a whole lot more than that before.
