I know some of you here work making quilts for hospitals and other charitys but I was wondering how many of you do volunteer work in your community and what do you do?

I volunteer at the weekly medical clinic a few times a month. I am getting ready to do my 4th year with a local country music festival. This weekend i'm volunteering for the first time with Operation Home Front manning one of their stations for the poker run at the fair. I hope to be allowed to do more for them in future. I used to volunteer with the local Christmas gift and food drive program things got warped by outside forces.

The one factor that keeps me coming back in all of these are the people who either we help or we meet in passing. I think this is something we should all teach our children.

So do you believe in volunteerism?

I started volunteering at our local hospital in 1973 when they started the volunteer section. I was one of the founding members, and some of us were there for over 28 years. In addition, I also was an Angel On Wheels, took cancer patients to other towns for treatment not available at that time close in town. In 1984 I added the blood bank at various times, since they had and still have odd hours, which in 2001 I had to go to because of DH's medical condition.
I've just walked in the door from a blood drive at one of our lovely Mennonite churches out of town. Those are the nicest folks around, and they have the best and only well mannered kids in America!!!
My DH was very supportive with my volunteering, he even cooked dinner sometimes when I was late in coming home!
I love going with the blood bank to various places, and I'm the only volunteer in the 22 counties Blood Source covers who is legally allowed to handle blood. I get to go to a lot of places most of the general public is not allowed...and I'm nosey enough to love it!!! Meet the nicest folks there...

Yes, yes. For years I was a community and school volunteer. I spent the better part of my 30s,40s, and 50s volunteering for everything. Burned out, so am taking a hiatus from everything except helping out family. My hubby loves helping out at the state fair every year also.

When my kids were in school I volunteered in the classroom.
Now I volunteer as the Mentor Mom in our church's MOPS group. I do other volunteering at church as well.

I guess being a moderator on here is a sort of volunteer work as well :) :) :)

I volunteer at church a lot, in various ways, in the office, and behind the scenes. I don't do more outside church because my health is too un-dependable.

I volunteered for a while at the Breast Clinic. Not being a person that ever worked in offices, I was not impressed with the way the staff "back stabbed each other". I just couldn't be around all those "games". Just don't think the hospital is the place for me. I loved making blocks for the charity quilts at the quiltshow.. :)

I did more volunteer work when the kids were little; scouts, school, church, sports. Now I volunteer with school dances, mini thon, church, quilts for kids.
