My mother/grandmother/aunts all did this very same thing. I asked my mother why she did it. Her answer was, you just never know when one would be needed. The main reason was a broken bra strap. Her exact words.. you never knew when the boulder holder would break, and it was not good to be near a wringer machine when it was broke. As she said, the bras were not as heavy duty back then as they are now. So I also asked my DH's mom..who is 10 years older..she said the same thing. lol

yes bra straps......sashes on dresses......and Diapers, you always needed some extra pins handy ...in case you drop one you need to finish diapering and then look for the pin, and when the children are older the pins were great for marking a seam that needed mending

Some ladies aprons did not have a strap around the neck. The apron top was pinned to what they were wearing.

I smiled when I read your post raedar63. My MIL always had a pin attached to her clothes as well. Never saw it before and now think of her fondly when I am reminded of her old habit. Thanks for the reminder.

The Static Electricity idea is an old one brought into the modern day.
I read somewhere that if you have static electricity in your polyester slacks, and wear panty hose,
pin a safety pin in the hem or side seam of the slacks. It will cut the cling. Most often I would use Static-guard
but tried it and safety pin does the job. Now, who wears polyester pants and panty hose these days...
those of us old enough to remember wearing nylon stockings and garters. That's who!!

My mom pinned a clean hankie to my school dress everyday. Sometimes my "milk money" was tied in it

I used to always have a safety pin or two on the zipper pull of my purse in case of need for either my clothes or the kids clothes. And always a little sewing kit, a box of bandaids and a bottle of ibuprofen in my desk drawer at work. Don't know what my former co-workers are doing now that I'm no longer there. LOL
