I used thin wool strips maybe 1/4 strip. I left 3 grid strip open (no cotton strips) then used mt needele and not string and just went in the first hole and out the third and just kept going. I did not sew the strip on this rug or lock the strips....it was easier not to. I will sew a few in the back, maybe...they are really in there and shouldn't come out of the holes since the thread locks them. I will sew on burlap on the back of the rug, but you really do not need to. If you feel others will pick it up as everyone has been doing...then you may want to just to make it look finished. The rug is so soft and very comfortable. My husband wants me to make a big one 9 x 10...no way...that is just too big. You will love your rug. I never gave it a though on color or prints I just used anything.

Oh No!!! I really DON'T need another project......BUT.....I LOVE THAT RUG !! I am going to have to live to be mighty old in order to do all the projects I have brewing in my head!!!
