One of my furry Angels used to use a barrel I had a small tree planted in. I placed 4 inch cobbles on the soil and he never bothered it again. The stones also acted as mulch, making the tree happier too!
He also used to get up on the table occasionally, so I placed orange peels on it...no luck. A squirt bottle worked wonders though! But you have to catch him doing it, and be close enough to use the squirt bottle. It didn't take long before he would run just at the sight of it!!
My DH peels an orange for an evening snack every night, the cats never move from his lap.

I used plastic forks instead of tooth picks then planted some catnip seeds as close to my neighbor's yard and far away from my flower pots and garden area as I could.

Our neighbor feeds all of the strays so we have boocoos of cats using our yard. I started spraying lavender (liquid) room freshener on our porch and around our house. I get it at Dollar General. Worked last summer!

black pepper a lot of it . They start scratching and then they start sneezing. also good to keep them off your cars

Red pepper flakes. They will get the scent, but no risk of a powder in their eyes or nose. Have used it for years & it works every time.

I have an outside cat but I provide a cat box in my garage. The owners should take responsibility for their cat. My neighbors all comment on how nice my cat is, and I've asked them if they have ever had her dig around in their flower areas. I do this because I have nice flowers too that I don't want ruined. And I don't want my cat to cause problems for anyone else.

Use something that is coarse or ruff to their feet like a Brillo pad or pot scrubbers. Lay a few around the perimeter of the pot. I wouldn't use anything toxic because when you water the plant it will seep into the soil and when the plant pulls up the water it will poison the plant. You want to deter the cats, not kill your plants in the process.

Put some gravel on top of the dirt. They don't like to dig in gravel. I use it in my indoor pots too.
