I have cruised many times with Holland America, and they are wonderful! Although the time of year you choose certainly can determine the number of children and young people on a cruise (I always book for May or September), HA definitely caters to an older crowd. By all means, get a room with a balcony if you can afford it; it is well worth the view. The shore excursions can be pricey, but if it is a special occasion, then go for it! You may never return. I highly recommend the Alaska cruises and the smaller Rhine and Mosel River cruises in Europe. I took a Norwegian Cruise out of Boston up into Canada and New England, and the service and food were pathetic. I'll never take that line again. Whatever you choose, ENJOY!

Well, here is an update.
We have decided that our two top destinations are:
New England to Canada or an Alaska cruise. We've decided against the Caribbean for now.

We have narrowed it down to Regents Seven Seas, Oceania, or Holland America. Our number one choice is already sold out for Oct. 2012, and number two is sold out to for May 2012.

I found out that new sailings are released for sale as much as 18 months in advance and can sell out (desirable cabins) in 4 months.

So it looks like we need to think ahead to 2013..so far away  I can't tell you how bummed out we are.

We went on a cruise to Alaska with Celebrity (summit) it was wonderful. We also went through the panama canal with Princess. It was very good but celebrity had lots of special touches. The price per day was about the same

I haven't quite given up yet. I'm nothing if not persistant. I am also looking at Crystal Cruises. I've now talked to a couple of the cruise lines to get a feel for the chance that they might get a cancellation. In the meantime we need to get our passports.

Princess Cruise Line to Alaska. Wonderful. Would use them again. We had a horrible experience on the Norwegian Dawn in May to Bermuda. The company took it out of drydock even though the remodeling was not finished. Terrible, terrible. I am sure that I wasn't the only one to email them and complain. Our group did not hear from them. So, we will never use them again.

I like Princess - very adult, upscale with a down to earth price.

Yes, get to work on the passports, sometimes, depending on the time of year, it can take forever!!!

Unless you don't get bored easliy, stay away from Holland, they cater to an older generation and really, while it is nice, there is NOT a lot to do onboard. I like Princess and Royal Caribbean, both equally cater to the same type of crowd. Lots of onboard activities and shore tour possiblities on both. Alaska is always good for a first time cruiser, they say, because in the inside passage there are no rough waters.
