Hello fellow quilters. I wanted to intoduce myself a bit to you. I first learned to sew and quilt at a quilt camp 10 years ago. I can't believe it has been that long. I am addicted to it now. I love fabrics and the thousands of patterns there are out there. I still feel though, that I am still learning. I am an imperfect quilter. Everthing I make has a bit of me in it. I have made quilts for raffles for various causes and for friends and family. I even sold a few. I have ventured off to placemats, bags, stockings etc.
My question to you all is this, how do you price your work? I charge for materials but I have a low convidence problem and never know what to charge for my time. I also live in a depressed area. Can you help?

Its very hard to figure out how to charge for time, but I was told triple the cost of the project, but in your case, depending where you sell it locally you may have to only charge twice the material cost and consider your time what you did not have to pay the therapist for your sewing therapy! hugs

Hi from West Virginia. Your work is beautiful and you should be proud. I cannot help you with pricing because I too, live in a depressed area and no one pays what anything is worth here either. I do know that your time is precious and you should be rewarded for the time you put into your quilts. If you charge too little for your quilts, customers will always expect you to price low. Most quilt lovers know that handmade quilts are pricey.In fact, I saw a pieced queen sized top (Very simple pattern) in a gift shop last week that was priced at $199.00. They must have used real gold thread(lol).This shop was in an area that was NOT a touristy place either. Hope this helps. Keep quilting.

I know what you mean about living in a depressed area. Pricing is tricky. Example: I made my friend a laptop bag as a birthday gift. She took it to work and everyone wanted one. I made and sold 14 of them but for only $20.00 each; didn't cover my time at all and I used fabric I had but it wouldn't have covered the price of new fabric. I saw them on Etsy for $40. But--I wouldn't have sold any in this area for $40. What to do? I like to sew and the money I made will pay for (what else?) more fabric so this was a win/win situation for me. It might not work for others or someone who's trying to make a living from their sewing. Sorry this was long-winded.
