Welcome from New York state! Quite a few people use fleece on the back. Often you don't need batting if you use fleece, because it's so warm.

Hello and welcome from central Alabama. I have used fleece on the back of several quilts and it works nicely.

Welcome from "on the road", currently the thriving metropolis of Detroit. I'm not sure what type of fabric you used on the top, but if you choose a fleece make sure it doesn't have a lot of give to it. The softer fleece will stretch a lot when you sew it on. Post a picture when it's done, and I'm sure she'll love it. That's nothing more precious when you are dealing with cancer than the thought people put into their prayers and deeds. You don't have to be accomplished to give a gift out of love, and if she is an excellent quilter, she will appreciate it all the more.
