I'm a self taught quilter. I machine piece and hand quilt. Well if I get the nerve up to do some quilting that is. I've tied all the quilts (two) I've made so far. I'm a history major in college and love the history of quilts and the traditional patterns.
I also hope to open a store on Etsy soon. (if this inappropriate to mention feel free to delete.)
I love using 100% cotton for my quilts and cotton batting. I'm still working on how to get edges done. Can't remember the word to finish off the quilt. Right now I just fold over the back of quilt to cover up the front, pin and sew.
I own a Singer sewing machine. It's pretty basic but gets what I need done.

A big welcome from Ireland, glad you found us. I think the word you were looking for is 'binding' the quilt. i.e. adding a different extra strip to the edges of your quilt and then folding it over and stitching it down to finish off the quilt neatly. If you need help with that, there are some great tutorials for you to watch.

i often fold my backing to the front instead of traditional binding. it's my preferred method. it saves me time and money. i only use a "real" binding if i didn't have enough of just the right fabric to use on the back that coordinated perfectly with those on the front.
sharing your dreams for the future is not the same as advertising. we love to encourage each other. it tickles us pink when a member has gained enough confidence (and inventory) to strike out into a professinal venture. i'm sure we all wish you great success! :-)
