hi everyone...i am a "beginning" quilter(and i dont have the termonology down so bear with me lol)...i have played around with it off and on for years and luv it...mostly making small things like pillows and baby quilts...i guess i should have stuck with just squares until i was able to get the seams to line up...but the discrepancies were small and didnt bother me...i think of it as proof that it was hand made....so i decided to move on to triangles...and lo and behold its even worse...i think i am doing everything i am supposed to...rotary cutter/iron seams/pin seams etc....and i both hand stitch and machine stitch from beginning to end...i know pics help alot but my camera is currently on the blink...thnx in advance for any input

Hello from Upstate, NY! Don't give up!!!! When I first started one of my biggest problems was stretching the material when I ironed seams. Now I carefully press them.
Just a thought. |

Welcome from NJ.
Remember when working with triangles,, there are 2 bias edges,, so sewing & pressing carefully is critical.. Don' t pull the triangle when sewingm just let the machine feed it, less chance of stretching. When pressing, use. Spray starch, & put the iron down on the fabric,, lift & move to the next area, don't move the iron along the seam. Hope these 2 suggestions help, don't get frustrated, even experienced quilters run inti bias stretching if not careful. |
Hello and welcome from New York. Just keep at it. Practice makes perfect (sometimes) LOL

Hi and welcome from Ohio! I learned the hard way that there's a difference between ironing and "Pressing". Put your iron down and then lift it up. Don't go back and forth with the iron. It stretches the fabric. That was my biggest lesson! Go for it. Every quilt is a learning experience!

Welcome from MO. If you are making triangles, you need a 61/2" Easy Angle Ruler. It makes creating blocks with triangles really easy.

Hello Redturtle, you might consided looking at the videos on youtube. Missouri quilts has lots on there for just about most any pattern. I find the easiers way to do triangles it to cut 2 squares a bit larger than you need, place them right sides together, draw a diagonal line on the lightest fabric then sew 1/4" away from the line on each side. Cut on the line and you have 2 matching half square triangle units. Then just square them up. Also look on the tutorials here. I am sure there are some good ones that will interest you.
Good luck and welcome to the group.. Happy Stitchin' Linda B. |
