Hello, I'm Veronica, Montgomery, AL. I'm quilting my first baby quilt. 30" x 30". Six squares across and six down. I was told to sew my border onto my quilt before I start quilting, but everything I have pulled up on the computer says, I should have quilted first then sewn on my border. Do I have to take off my border strips before I can starting quilting? Please help.

I think you may be confusing the terms "border" and "binding".

Borders go on before quilting and are quilted with the quilt. Borders are like the frame of the quilt. Some quilts have many borders some have none.

Binding goes on after quilting to cover the raw edge. Bindings are generally only 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide. All quilts (except rag quilts) will have some kind of a binding.

I hope this points you in the right direction. Ask more questions if you are still confused.

Welcome to the board from Southern California!!!

Not sure if you are asking about binding or borders. I always sew on my borders before quilting. They get quilted as well. The binding, on the other hand is done after all the quilting is finished and I have trimmed and "squared" up the quilt. the binding is the finishing touch.

Do you mean border or binding? Borders are added before and frame the design. They are part of the quilt top. Binding is done after quilting to finish up and hide the raw edges. I did quilt one once after binding and I think I was just very lucky I didn't end up with any puckers. If you've already done the binding, you might try, just be very careful :-D
