Hi and welcome from Texas.
Like everyone else has said.. get familiar with your sewing machine first. I'd suggest making a pillow case. That would be a good way to master a straight stitch. My first quilt was rail-fence. And that was last October. You can have fun with this craft.

Hi from East TN! I really can't add any better advice than what's been said! Learning about your machine will make things much easier. Buying a charm pack of fabric and sewing the squares together is great practice for getting a true 1/4 inch seam and matching corners, and you'll have a nice wall hanging or baby size quilt when you're done.
