Brand New to Quilting
I never did a quilt in my life and have very little knowledge of the sewing machine! Any suggestions for something very simple to start off with? Thanks!!

First...get used to that sewing machine. Read the manual, etc. I love the Irish Chain for a beginner quilt. straight lines, ends up with nine patch and single blocks alternated to form a chain look.
Google "Single Irish Chain Quilt pattern"...and tons will come up...choose a free one. Check this group for information also...if you don't see a pattern for Irish chain, look for "nine patch" If you have questions...this quilt board will be there for you. |
Thanks will look for it!

Hello, welcome from Oklahoma!!! :)

Hi Marge and welcome from NE Ohio.

Howdy and welcome, from Texas!
Before you start quilting, you might want to do a few simple sewing projects, to get familiar with your machine. |
Welcome from Ontario, Canada. Read your machine instructions to get familiar with the features. If you bought it at a local dealer, take a beginner's quilt class if you can. If you are starting on your own, buy some cotton fabric to get started. You can sew with other fabrics but cotton is easier. Sew yourself a couple of pot holders and then move up to placemats or a table runner. You can find some great YouTube videos done by the Missouri Star Quilt co. to start you on your way.

Welcome from Southern California. Once you decide what you want to make, then find a good book to have close at hand or video it a great help too. I did the very basic patchwork quilt for my first one. It gets you sewing the 1/4 inch seam and then matching corners. Just don't be too critical of your work. Everyone looks back at the first few quilts and cringe then laugh.

Welcome from Minnesota and happy quilting :)

Hi and welcome from Texas.
Like everyone else has said.. get familiar with your sewing machine first. I'd suggest making a pillow case. That would be a good way to master a straight stitch. My first quilt was rail-fence. And that was last October. You can have fun with this craft. |
Welcome from TX. Take a class or two.

Hello and welcome from northern California!
|
Welcome, not sure where you are but see if you can find some beginner classes or someone willing to help you along the way.
|
Hi from East TN! I really can't add any better advice than what's been said! Learning about your machine will make things much easier. Buying a charm pack of fabric and sewing the squares together is great practice for getting a true 1/4 inch seam and matching corners, and you'll have a nice wall hanging or baby size quilt when you're done.

Hello Linda!
Welcome from Minnesota! Take some classes! They will help you get accustomed to your machine and the tools you need WHILE you learn!! Have fun! :) |
Hello! Welcome aboard. If you go to www.quilterscache.com you will see lots of good free patterns, all rated by difficulty. My first was 9 patches with sashing. Rail fence is also a good choice. If you have a background in embroidery or have a machine with fancy stitches, crazy blocks don't require a special sewing skill and can be spectacular, even if time consuming. Feel free to ask if you encounter any difficulties/questions. I suspect that like me, you will find the hardest part is the 1/4" seam allowances quilters use.

Hiya, welcome from me here on the Isle of Anglesey, what all the ladies have said, but start small as the one thing you need to master is the handling of the machine and the scant 1/4" seam. One of the easiest and stress free intros to quilting is buy a Jelly roll, Google it and try this pattern: http://www.ehow.com/how_5068537_make...nce-quilt.html one of the easiest and fastest patterns to do but it will teach you the importance of your seam.

I'm a beginner too, and I started with a kit, so I wouldn't have to make too many decisions and could just focus on construction. It's so much fun and I have lots of different projects going now. Dive in, it's a blast!

Welcome!
The first class I took over 20 years ago was rotary cutting a rail fence pattern, and I've been addicted since then. It's a very simple pattern, and a good test for accurate 1/4 seams too. If you aren't familiar with rotary cutting, I would recommend learning that - it takes the frustration out of cutting with scissors. |
Thank you!! I love this quilt, it doesn't look to hard, maybe I will give it a try!

This is a great site!!!
