hey I'm a new quilter. I have mostly boutiques in my quilt but I was wondering if I can mix some stamped pattern type cloth into the quilt. I think it looks ok, but not too sure since I'm new to this. Is it going to look really funny? Thanks! And if you have any pictures of mixed quilts please send me a link.

Hello and welcome from Minnesota!
Do you mean batiks?
If you like the looks of it, you can do whatever you like!
Show us a picture and see what everyone on the board thinks! That might help you in making a decision.

I mix fabrics all the time. My avatar is a combination of batiks and woven prints. I just sent a quilt off to my LAQ that had woven prints, knit minkee and brushed flannel. When I get it back I plan to add a satin binding. If it looks good - and you like it, go for it - it's your creation!

Oh, and BTW - Welcome from Wisconsin :D

I've mixed fabrics for quilts before. I use people's clothing to make memory quits for others. They contain all types of fabrics.

Greetings from California. I would recommend that your fabrics should be of similar weight. If some are too thin, you can secure them to a heavier interfacing and stabilize the pieces. It is also important that the different fabrics handle well in the wash. As long as those factors are met - go for it. Your quilt, your design, your rules!

I mix it all. I like them better that way. There are quilts I mix Civil War, Hawaiian, batik, 1930, contemporary. whatever I like. I am sure there are people who do not care for it but if you like it it is all that matters.
Welcome!

This quilt has a batik border and baskets made with different fabrics including hawaiian and reproduction.

Hey thanks everyone! I am using a confetti white background and mostly Batiks (sorry I didn't know how to spell it but now I do). I'll post up the picture when I'm done with it. It's still fairly new. Again thanks for welcoming me and all the nice inputs.

ckcowl 05-26-2011 10:37 AM

batiks tend to bleed-so i would be sure to pre-wash them- but you can mix anything you want- the only thing i ever worry about is whether or not they can be laundered together- as long as they all can be washed- they all can be used in my book

Pieceful Quilter 05-27-2011 07:02 AM

I'm making a scrappy quilt right now that has cotton, flannel, corduroy, sparkly Christmas fabric, batiks...

If you like it, use it! (Unless it is going to fall apart, or shrink, or bleed uncontrollably.)

amma 05-27-2011 08:35 AM

Hello and Welcome to the board :D:D:D
Quilts that are going to be washed and used a lot, I am more careful mixing fabrics. Wall hangings, quilts that aren't used often, I would mix just about anything.
