Hi everyone! I am new to the quilting board and quilting. Just happened upon it Wednesday and was thrilled to see so much information in one site.

My question: if a fat quarter measures 18"x20", which direction do I cut long strips from? I was reading from a quilting book but it didn't go into any detail as to cutting. Is the 20" side from 1/2 a width of fabric? I'm confused!!! Any help will be appreciated.

Hello and Welcome from Northern Indiana ! Glad you joined us

Are you following a pattern- usually it will tell you what side to cut - if not does it say how long you need the strips ?

Welcome to the board from Southern California!

The patterns that I have that called for that kind of cut is from the 20-22" side, not the 18" one. That cut would be selvedge to selvedge in a whole width piece.

A fat quarter is 18" x 22" or half the width of the fabric and half the length of a yard. Most quilting fabric is about 44" wide. You usually cut strips from the width or the 22" side. Hope this helps. And have fun!!!

Welcome from Michigan.

Hi! Thank you for your response. I looked at the pattern again and it really doesn't say which side to cut from. I just figured I would do the 20" side because it was longer. Maybe I need to look for another pattern to start with.

Wow, clear from Germany! So how many years have you been quilting? I'm assuming you are an expert!!!

Hi Michigan! Are you freezing up there? I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and it's been pretty chilly here.
